Councillors' Allowances Figures Revealed

Monday June 10 2013

Allowances revealed Allowances revealed

BOROUGH councillors were paid more than £900,000 in allowances in the last financial year - including seven who earned more than £24,000.

The highest earner was council leader Steve Houghton, whose allowance was £35,657.90.

His deputy, Cllr Jim Andrews, was paid £26,759 while Cllr Linda Burgess (£24,504), Cllr Tim Cheetham (£24,518), Cllr Roy Miller (£24,999), Cllr Jenny Platts (£24,586.45) and Cllr Dick Wraith (£29,668.85) also broke the £24,000 mark.

Each councillor is given a basic allowance of £10,426 which is topped up with 'special responsibility allowance' payments for duties such as being a cabinet member or leading a scrutiny commission.

Cllr Miller's allowance included a payment of £14,078 in recognition of his cabinet duties and he also claimed £495 for travel and subsistence.

Only 25 councillors made travel and subsistence claims in total, and the highest was made by Cllr May Noble, who represents the Dearne South ward.

She was paid £848.70 on top of the £13,328 she gets for her council, planning board, appeals and standards board duties.

The payments cover the period April 1 2012, to March 31 2013.

Am sure they can't account for all that amount of money truthfully, plus why do we need all these Councillors, can't see any need for them.?

Its the old boys club. Funny handshakes gang.

I would not mind councillors receiving these payments if they were good at what they were doing. The most dynamic (ha ha) councillors are in the cabinet and let's be fair, what a shower they are. When I see these incompetents it does make me wonder what the other elected members are like who hold no position of authority.
Look around you, what do you see? One of the poorest, most impoverished, underdeveloped towns in the whole of Europe. Why do we put up with it? Vote them out I say and let others have a go. Surely they cannot do any worse.

don't tarr all councillors with the same brush, there are some councillors out there that are passionate about the job and feel it is a privilege to be an elected member, they do work for their local community and give all that they can

wonder how much the ones involved in children's services got cos they don't deserve a penny with what they do to people.

Reply Posted by Rothschild on Monday June 10 2013 at 12:42
Of course they can't, but we never ask them to, so why would they? :) they believe erroneously that they are in some way entitled to it, because they occupy a seat on a local council. This subsidy comes on top of a very generous remuneration package we also give to then, and also on top of a guilt edged pension arrangement, a real golden handshake for the top brass who take hundreds of thousands from the people without batting an eyelid, again, thinking that they have 'earned' it. It would be funny if it didn't cost others their livelihoods.

25 grand a year for attending meetings free dinners and hrumphing every so often, the ones at the top are of no surprise, just milking the cash cow whilst telling us there is no money for basic services and works.

Steve Houghton has no shame, already pocketing more than the prime ministers salary he tops it up near to the 200k mark by claiming 35 grand in allowances.

Who votes for the changes to the allowances by the way? That's right the cabinet, the same people that also vote on their own salaries, pensions and benefits.

These scrutiny commissions they keep coming up with to get even more, the latest being the employability scutiny commission where they sit round, state the obvious, do nothing, send out a press release and then pat each other on the back a job well done. Whats worse none of them on the board have a clue anyway about what they are talking about.

I wish we could put forward a vote of no-confidence these clowns all need the sack.

Yup exactamundo Guesty.

Gone are the days when councillors represented us and became councillors not just for the love of the job but for the love of Barnsley town and its inhabitants.

Classic example is the amount of consultants that BMBC use, it is evidently clear they do not have a clue and that is why said consultants are hired at vastly inflated prices.

I truly despair that local people continually vote these idiots in time after time after time, and keep ramming this point home every time I post regarding BMBC:

They have done absolutely NOTHING for our town, they are only in it to feather their own nests.

Kick them out NOW!

my dad was a Councillor in the 80's early 90's and I'm almost certain my dad didn't get paid this much my dad worked as a Councillor because he wanted to help the people of Barnsley and to try and make a difference to the community for the better our door at home was always open to the residents of Barnsley anytime and we lived in a council house on a council estate the Councillors of today should take a leaf out of the old style Councillors it's not all about the money it should be what's more important to the people of the borough

Got be honest......One of the best Councillors Barnsley has had was Jim Smith (Independent) Did more for the people of Kendray than the rest of 'em put together and never gave a toss about personal reward!

It were Labour Party that brought expenses up to this level, but most people in Barnsley still vote for em, so who's to blame.???

Reply Posted by Jon on Tuesday June 11 2013 at 14:27
The councillors are all paid a set amount of salary for their role - I now understand that they will get expenses for travelling based on their distance from the town hall. As I understand it this is surely their place of work - and they are also allowed to work from home.
I don't know of anyone who can claim expenses for their normal travel to work...
It's amazing how so many of the councillors drive round in big swanky cars, John Parkinson (now retired) drives round in a Jag and Roy Miller, one of the few who claimed travel expenses and one of the highest claiming salaries/allowances drives round in a gas guzzling 4 wheel drive newish Land Rover. Good to see that the council cut backs don't harm the already overpaid.

Just a quick thought -
Can the council please publish the total amount of expenses claimed by only 25 of the councillors......
and then can they publish how much will be spent on travel expenses once this automatic payment comes in to force....
I bet this false economy costs more than it did previously!!!
If those who claimed expenses were in the minority and those who didn't claim any were in the majority, there must be a reason for this. Why not put this to a public vote where OUR council representatives make clear how they INDIVIDUALLY vote on whether expenses are approved or not, I bet they'd be a bit worried about what their constituents thought of them then.

Might have known it would have been a Goldthorpe councillor that claimed more travelling expenses because she does feck all in the village or for the village.

White collar workers allways get too much
and always have even in the 60s/70s
and i lived in a conservative town.
They need all this money to keep there spare in a life of luxury......
And for such as suey further up the board there are lower end people who do the job because they are loyal people who just do the job and do it well .
But the other corrupt half are bent as nine bob notes like the type that wants 15grand for security for his own house...past..... i would have sat on his step for a year for that sort of money.at that time.
If you delved into the bowels of these workers since the 1960s all the cons and all the propertys all over the country
would probably pay the national debt

OBSCENE!! ....i could cut that figure by a 3rd in 1 go, by getting rid of just 1 useless t*** from each ward. Just think, for instance, how much tarmac i could put onto the worn out roads in the borough. Just out of curiosity, does the council have a road maintenence budget??.... if so, WTF do they spend it on?

I've been in dispute with BMBC for two years. It took a month to get a reply from Councillor Cheetham (Royston). When I protested I was accused of being 'peculiar, aggressive and abusive'. In a nutshell Councillor Cheetham has further aggravated my complaint. It is perfectly clear he represents the council and not the ward constitutes.

I am pressing ahead with a formal complaint against Councillor Cheetham and I will not let this go. I would approach another ward councillor but the other appears to be a family member of Councillor Cheetham's.

I thought councillors represented their constituents. I got that completely wrong.

I wish people would put into action as much as they criticize councillors, all the meetings they do have to attend for their allowances, work out in the community, with local residents etc. All of you, of course, know better, if so why aren't you running for council then?
