A PRIMARY school which raised more than £2,500 to sponsor a guide dog has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley Award.

Birkwood Primary's former pupil, Liam White, has used a guide dog after being blind since birth.

Guide dog-to-be Woody, who is four months old, paid a visit to the school last week.

Their fundraising efforts have helped to train the labrador and the school has been able to name him.

The school's newly-crowned best headteacher in the North of England, Julie Allen, said: "It was really exciting to meet Woody and it was also great to meet his puppy walker Alison and to find out all about the training and what his personality is like.

"These little things bring us closer to the whole process and it's fascinating."

Dan Wood, the school's deputy head, added: "We're really delighted with the community's response; it's extremely generous especially in these difficult times. We think we've done something extremely worthwhile."
