Evans Closing To Make Way For Costa

Sunday November 6 2011

Evans Closing Evans Closing

EVANS clothes shop in Barnsley town centre is to close this month to make way for a Costa Coffee.

The signs went up on the shop this week, stating that Evans will close on November 16. The planning application for the coffee shop sparked controversy when We Are Barnsley reported it back in February, as the staff who worked in Evans said they hadn't even been told their store was closing down.

Costa Coffee Ltd was given permission to open up a mixed use coffee shop in the building, with an area for external seating being considered.

A spokesman said: "The Costa in Barnsley will trade as a coffee shop on the ground floor with facilities to either take away purchases or consume them on the premises. It will incorporate a retail element with a counter
containing items such as cafetières, cups, saucers, coffee beans available for retail sales."

brilliant! Barnsley needs bringing into the modern world, and a coffee shop is a great place to start!

can't see ANOTHER cafe / coffee shop lasting...so anyone who isn't a size 6 to 12 will now have nowhere to shop in Barnsley! Disgraceful!

It can't have had that much trade otherwise they'd have been able to keep it open. Most shops go up to a 22 anyway and are cheaper than Evans x

Ha ha ha Cafe culture in Barnsley?  it is a bit of a joke. Well it will be some where for folk to sit out and get their lungs full of the fag smoke everyone seems to be puffing out every time I am in town. Another shop bites the dust no wonder people go to Meadowhall and White Rose to spend.

ZZZ more council bashing, when closing it isnt a council move.Evans central office will have closed it. Not a fan of big chains, but really we should see it as a positive that big brands like Costa/Debenhams want to invest in Barnsley, and if you don't want to go in Costa don't. There is a huge asda/morrisons in Barnsley and I choose neither, I shop for food on the market. So make your choices, be grateful people see Barnsley as a place to invest.

Finally Barnsley is being brought into the modern world and looks like larger shops that people purposely go to meadowhall and white rose for! obvously barnsley needs this to bring people back  into the town to spend money! Now there will be somewhere decent to go for a coffee in barnsley!

Glynn, if you want a "proper" coffee come and visit "Not just Coffee" just through underpass at alhambra on Doncaster road, near keegan sports, possibly the best coffee in town
