We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

WOMBWELL is the only Barnsley district where domestic abuse has gone down, according to a recent report.

The report, given at the council's ruling cabinet, shows a seven per cent drop in the levels of domestic violence reported between 2010 and 2011.

There were 348 cases reported in the Wombwell and Darfield Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) area in 2010, which made up nine per cent of the Barnsley total.

In 2011, however, there were 323 - which constituted eight per cent of the total.

By comparison, there was a five per cent increase in the borough overall and a 39 per cent increase in Penistone.

Barnsley's Police Protection Unit - which deals with domestic abuse - is housed at Wombwell police station and local SNT Sgt Phil Jenkins said he was very pleased with the figures.

He said: "It's great news as domestic abuse is one our priorities. A very high proportion of murders are domestic so it's something we take very seriously."
