Barnsley Diver Dies In North Sea

Friday November 4 2011

A BARNSLEY man has died while working on an oil platform in the North Sea 140 miles off Aberdeen.

Diver Russell Robinson, 33, from Barnsley died on Sunday night. He had been part of a three-man team carrying out routine work for Integrated Subsea Services (ISS) on behalf of oil company Premier Oil UK at the Balmoral floating production vessel.

It is thought that Russell's work colleagues contacted the Aberdeen coastguards to let them know he had lost consciousness and was being brought back to the surface - he was later pronounced dead.

Oil & Gas UK - the representatives for the offshore industry - released this statement. A spokesman said: "Oil & Gas UK is deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Russell Robinson who was a diver working on the Balmoral installation in the North Sea and sends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

"We will look to work with colleagues at Premier Oil and the HSE to understand the circumstances that led up to this tragic event so that we may share the information and the lessons from it with our members."
