Youngsters To Get Behind Wheel

Youngsters set to get behind the wheel at school Youngsters set to get behind the wheel at school

CHILDREN as young as 11 will be given the opportunity to get behind the wheel as part of a driving scheme at their school.

Young Driver gives youngsters at Penistone Grammar School the chance to learn how to drive before they turn 17, using a specially-designed course built to replicate roads.

Lessons take place in the school car park and children will be taught how to start, stop, steer, reverse, corner and change gear.

Kim Stanton, from Young Driver, said: "Twenty per cent of youngsters will have an accident within the first six months of passing their test. Road accidents are still the largest killer of 17 to 24-year-olds in the UK.

"Starting to learn from a younger age when teenagers are very receptive to learning and are not rushing to pass their driving test makes sense."

I think this would be a good idea for all schools to adapt...the Americans do a similar programme n I for one would have loved to have done something like this at school
