AN 11-year-old from Royston is pulling on his walking boots to embark on a gruelling mountain climb in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Zak Petherbridge will be scaling Helvellyn in the Lake District on June 1 after losing his uncle and his grandad to cancer.

Zak, a pupil at Royston St John The Baptist School, will climb 950ft to the summit with family and friends including his mum Sarah, 43.

He decided to take on the challenge after a family climb up Ben Nevis in Scotland.

"I've not really done any training but we already do a lot of walking," Zak said.

“I enjoy walking - it was really good doing Ben Nevis and it's a good idea to do it for Cancer Research.”

So far Zak has raised about £530 and Sarah says they have been amazed how generous people have been.

"I'm so blessed to have him as my son and I'm super proud of him," she said.
