MP Dan Jarvis has supported the launch of a new First World War programme which is offering funding to mark its centenary.

Jarvis - a former soldier - is encouraging people from across the town to think about how they would like to mark the anniversary. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is providing community grants up to £10,000.

"Like many towns across Britain, the impact of the First World War on the people of Barnsley was devastating," said the MP.

"I’m pleased that the HLF is making this money available to local communities. It will enable us to explore the continuing legacy of the war and help young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.

"I know that the people of Barnsley, the local authority and many others will want to commemorate the 100th anniversary in the most appropriate way."
