BIRDWELL Primary School has double cause for celebration as results in national English tests places it in the top 20 per cent of all schools - and it was rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted.

The Sheffield Road school was said to be outstanding for the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, as well as leadership and management.

Inspectors said pupils make outstanding progress in literacy and mathematics, and attainment is above average.

"The school's results in national tests places them in the top 20 per cent of all schools for English," states the report.

"Teaching is extremely good in every class. Tasks challenge pupils to think for themselves."

The report also states behaviour of pupils is 'outstanding' and the children 'work very hard' and enjoy doing so.

Pupils feel 'extremely safe' because they're looked after very well and the leadership and management is 'outstanding'. As a result pupils are ambitious with achievement improving each year.

It rated the leadership of teaching as a 'major strength' and said governors give 'excellent support' to the school and help it to improve further.
