Nearing completion: Wentworth Castle Gardens Nearing completion: Wentworth Castle Gardens

THE restoration of a Victorian conservatory at Wentworth Castle Gardens is near to completion.

The glasshouse's iron frame has been returned to the stately home after months of work, after it was dismantled and sent for renovation and repair.

Now parts of the 4,000-piece frame are being reassembled as the project reaches the latest stage in its £3.7million restoration.

The structure - built by Thomas Wentworth in 1885 - is due to open to visitors in the autumn.

The worrying state of the conservatory came to light in 2003 when the BBC's popular Restoration programme documented its plight.

Claire Herring, a director of the Wentworth Castle Trust, said: "We're delighted the conservatory is returning to our site after its sympathetic restoration.

"We're all very excited about seeing this part of Barnsley's heritage restored to its former glory."
