MOST people take healthcare for granted, but a Barnsley fundraiser has said it is very different for those in Gambia.

Tina Fisher and her husband, Patrick, have witnessed the African country's plight first hand.

Having discovered the place on a winter holiday, they fell in love with it and have been to Gambia three times in the last 12 months.

They were keen to contribute in some way to improve lives in the poverty-stricken country.

On other visits to Gambia, they've helped to supply books to a school and donated shoes and clothing to a whole village.

Her employers, Barugh Green-based Amalgamated Construction, held a dress down day last Friday where employees chipped in with a small donation, and the couple also held a fundraiser at the Kings Head in Mapplewell the day after.

She's raised £700 so far, and the proceeds are heading to First Aid 4 Gambia.

"The night was a great success raising much-needed money for First Aid 4 Gambia," Tina, 53, said.

"My husband, the pub's landlord and three friends appeared as ‘The Space Girls’. The event really caught the imagination of the local community.

"Gambia's people are so friendly and they're happy with their lot - they'll do anything to help each other and share what little they have."
