MEMBERS of a working men's club in Athersley North that closed two months ago have been told it will re-open on May 10.

Mansfield Road-based Athersley Social WMC closed amid financial problems, but will re-open as a social club.

A license has been applied for by Gerald Hart, a regional sales manager for Sam Smith's Brewery, but there would be no provision of live music, dance or entertainment such as live sporting events shown on TV.

One club member believes there will still be snooker and pool, but the bandit jackpot will be reduced to £75 from £250.

obviously the reason the jackpot has been reduced is because of the gambling licence, so without a gambling licence there will be no bingo e.t.c wow the atmosphere sound like it will be electric.
they need to get people back in the club, but to do that they have to give incensive to do so!!!
also can we have an update on whats happening to the disgraced committee? and to the post of the steward please!!

All wmc's are dumps full of the unemployed who don't mind sitting drinking in dives coz of cheaper beer. They should all be closed down.

It used to be a great live band venue we need to also get the young generation of today to socialise and support their local clubs to keep them open

The comments above are just a waste of time, its no use slagging one another off,the real reason the members have lost their club is because of bad management, incompetance and sheer greed. The people reasponsible for this know this and are walking around scot free. The elusive account books are the only way It can be proved.Well I hope the people concerned have to look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.IT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.

I am absolutely fuming with the statement in this weeks cronicle, implying that the members are at fault regarding the clubs closure. Not one member was informed or knew of the appalling financial situation the club was in.No meeting was every called and no assistance was requested from the officials of the club to any party. They were blatantly adverse towards any suggestion in regards to the succcessful running of the club, and refused the help of an auditor (FREE OF CHARGE) to handle the finances. This in its self shows the reasons this invitation was declined. They are to blame for the loss of one of the once best club in Yorkshire no one else.I sincerly hope that some time down the line they will pay the price for it.

So,yet again the so called officals of the club are delaying the reopening of the club, due to one or more of them not signing over to Samsmiths to enable them to take over.Maybe that once they do they then will be held responsible for the financial problems they got the club in.They have a lot to answer for, they fobbed the the members off with excusers, let them try it with the authorities.

back in the 70,s and 80,s was a fantastic club to go to until the miners were shafted , then the money was not there anymore. So these person,s who think its full of dole pushes, go away you dont even know what the meaning of a workingman is. I used to go in there and there was a fantastic crowd of all types of people young and old, good turns, and a fantastic day out for the kids who would not get a holiday if it wernt for the club committe at the time. But unfortunately there will always be crooks. Hope you guys get justice. P.S i hope the people go back to the club and make it what it was A WORKING MAN,S CLUB
