Barnsley Neighbourhoods Are Among Poorest In Country

NEIGHBOURHOODS in Barnsley are among some of the poorest in Britain according to new research.

The study has been commissioned by the Financial Times to look into the impact of austerity amid sweeping changes made to the welfare and benefits system.

The investigation is the first to examine the local economic and business impact of the reforms, using research by Christina Beatty and Steve Fothergill, of Sheffield Hallam University.

Research shows cuts to welfare payments will hit northern towns and cities up to five times as hard as those in the south.

The information has been used to create the FT's 'austerity map of Britain' - which shows almost a third of neighbourhoods in Barnsley are among the poorest 20 per cent in the country.

The map shows the overall impact of cuts to welfare payments in the borough will take £93m out of Barnsley people's pockets up to 2015. That means working-age residents will be £626 worse off a year.

Some of the highest sums working-age residents in the borough will lose per year are: £108 with the government's plan to increase benefits by one per cent a year, rather than in line with inflation; £115 in tax credits, compared to the national average of £88; disability living allowance cuts of £59, compared to the national average of £37; and incapacity benefit cuts of £197 are much higher than the national average of £103.

Cllr Steve Houghton said in order to address the austerity in Barnsley, the local economy needs to be revived and jobs need to be found.

"Jobs are good anyway but it becomes more imperative to spend time bringing new business and creating new jobs from that," he said.

"What we will do with people is keep up support in terms of welfare rights, and give people the best advice working with Citizens Advice, the Credit Union and Voluntary Action Barnsley.

"The Tory-led government is cutting money to the poorest people in society and it is very difficult to manage that.

"We will keep working to support small businesses but it is going to be a heck of a difficult next three years.

"What I can guarantee is we will do everything we can to support vulnerable people by growing the economy and jobs, and shouting up and standing up for Barnsley."

More and more people are working part-time for minimum wages or just above that, Theres technically over 2.5million people out of work, But how many people are actually in work but are on poor wages and reliant on benefits to top up there income? (no one asks this question). Proper jobs for a proper wage where people arent dependent on benefits and have some disposable income each week/month to spend in the community in shops/restaurants/pubs etc. Thats how you get growth it aint rocket science and you dont need a degree from Eton to work it out Mr Cameron!

Companies which are able to offer good quality full time employment paying decent wages and salaries will not come to Barnsley as the people of the area are not suitably qualified. A bold statement I know, but sadly true. Would you bring your successful business to the borough when you see substantial members of the community celebrating the death of a woman by burning an effigy of her in the street during an all day party? Of course not, you would set up somewhere else where it is more civilised. How do you think outsiders see us?
The record of Barnsley Council in attracting business to the borough over the last thirty years is absolutely shocking. I am not sure what planet Steve Houghton is on. Has he just woken up after a long sleep and been told that we have a problem. It appears to me that way.

Absolute garbage as per usual from Graham the Tory.
All you seem to do is slag our town off,if you don't like it p*ss of to leeds or Sheffield.

There are thousands of people in our town that are well educated, but as they are that well educated they have to travel to their place of work as there aren't any decent companies that pay decent wages within the borough.
Let alone any companies that actively recruit degree educated people.

As for Goldthorpe, the village had two pits within two miles of each other and was THE major employer for many generations, tell me how would you feel if the your employer closed down?
Goldthorpe has one of the highest poverty rates in the whole of the UK, tell me have you been through Goldthorpe recently?
I went through last week and it is a ghost town, there were more boarded up houses than lived in ones.
NO major employer has gone into the village to replace the mines.

I am going to agree with you about Houghton, he and his Labour cohorts sit in their recently refurbished ivory tower and they have done NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING for this town, the sooner Barnsley and its residents realise this and kick them to the gutter where they belong the better.
All he (Houghton) does it bleat about Tory cuts, the last time the Tories were in power we had the same old line.

As an " outsider " Graham, I fully agree with you. I moved here, 3 yrs ago and it's dreadful and the people are stuck in a time warp. People keep saying " It's the same, everywhere " NO, IT ISN'T.. and the sadest thing is, nobody trust's anyone else.

Well, Lyndon seems like a nice chap!

Is there any wonder that the rest of the country think about us in the way that they do when there are people like Lyndon walking the streets.

Dont be silly 60%oof people that live in london arnt even english they probably dont even know who what or where barnsley is and the government dont give a toss.....there are loads of people who are famous from barnsley area who have gone into films .actors sports personalitys
etc that still live here and some have moved away because of the money.....
Dorothy hyman still lives in barnsley.
Bobby knutt ...seth who died actor that played in alien 4 loads of people....
We lost a lot of businesses in barnsley just like any other town or city in the country
the reason barnsley is so poor...is because
somebody said we are. from some university that get grants for coming up with shit answers.....the reason we have more charity shops is not cos we are poor
but because we just like buying something cheap although the thieves in charity shops in barnsley centre charge more than shop prices and have less rents to pay. but the more people tell you your poor people will start to believe it

Les you are proving Graham right with your answer. You are talking about Bobby Knutt and people who are probably dead and anyone under the age of 40 will not remember. Typical Barnsleyite who lives in the past.
We are in the 21st century and the pits have gone and will not return. Barnsley centre is a dump and the labour council have never done chuff all for Barnsley.
Some do have some qualifications but they are vastly outnumbered by the masses who have none and who barely went to school.
Stunts like the burning of the Thatcher effigy whilst almost understandable will not bring businesses to Barnsley. We managed to alienate the south decades ago and surely do not show a good face to the rest of the UK.
BTW, just because Barnsley is mainly white do we really have to show our Barnsleyite ignorance by talking of the "furrinners darn sarf"??

the reason companies dont invest in barnsley graham is because they read the drivvle people like you keep writing, instead of condeming our town graham defend it. most of us barnsley folk happen to be proud of where we are from if its so bad then why dont you pack your bags and move somewhere more suited to your tory ideals

To the person who thinks i am a clown.
I know what charity shops do and charitys.in general not per individual
take cancer research for instance dont you read the news do you not know that cancer charities have been collecting money since before 1870 worldwide .this is probably a bigger business than bp....and when the cures or the drugs to extend life are found . the n. h s cant afford these drugs because there to expensive . and who creates the drugs the research companys that are supported by charities and government grants ..as i am a clown get your calculator out and work out how many trillions have goneinto the research since 1870 then delve into the others...not all are bad

i am barnsley born and bred. but to hear most ofyour comments on ere jus further adds to the embarrasment i feel, wen wil u people realise u are stuck in a time warp??? leeds is like a different world!! they have a diverse community and open minded attitude and welcome positive change, in barnsley we complain, and shout cos one of our long time traditions (which are usually terrible) has been ended, we talk of charity shops and be "prard o ar tarn" proud of wat?? the fact your all still angry at thatcher?? GET OVER IT !! move on!! this is exactly why we live in a shit hole!!!!! and as for being poor cos someone told us we are?? gwt a grip!! then lets address the businesses dont come here issue, its not cos we slag the place off its because any moron can see its a dump ad has no one spending unless its on fags booze primark or pound shops, check out costa coffee in leeds, its packed people trippin up to spend £3 on a coffee in ther lunch hour, but in barnsley they fetch a potted meat roll ear it on a bench and go to market for a 50p cuppa cos "im not paying £3" attittude!! so costa will leave and we will welcome a third poundland, barnsley will never move on, the embarrasment of the goldthorpe thatcher party will mo doubt be repeated, the people who cant find time for a job will find time to protest about bedroom tax, (which needs to be more) and u will all still be on ere in 20 yearz still saying same thing!! wheras i will be out of ere the day i hit fifty, to retire somewere were people have a desire to change and open ther minds, ill rake every penny i earnt in this dive and spend it elsewere, u keep ya barnsley ya so eager to be proud off and Enjoy!!!

never in a zillion years would i ever have thought i would be defending goldthorpe but we are having a huge warehouse built creating jobs yes maybe for the polish from doncaster but the village idiots did not put them off building it and i can categorically state it is a safer village for my children to walk round in than barnsley, so if i was to employ people i would stay up here rather than go into barnsley as you cannot even go for a bus without being attacked by a group of morons.Crime is a big factor in bringing in work and at the moment there are too many ferrell older teens running wild.

I second what 'Get Real' says. I work hard, but the money I spend is not in this town. There is nothing that I want to buy here anymore! The only thing I buy from this town is my groceries. I am from Barnsley, I have worked in the South, I came back. Nothing changed in the time I was away! But I am lucky, I have a job here. Som people are educated to a high standard. Not everyone is 'thick'. A lot of Barnsley people have very good jobs. I think that is down to a good work ethic, forgetting about apathy, and moving on from Thatcher! There is only so long blaming someone for your own misfortunes can last.

I agree totally with anorak, sarah and get real.
The problems with Barnsley are because of people like les, lyndon and stevo. They are the old stuck in the mud, labour voting, ex mining halfwits that cannot see that they are the problem.

the problem with barnsley grim are the people who have to resort to petty insults because they dont have anything inteligent or constructive to say

Simple solution if you don't like living here move away, otherwise roll up your sleeves and do something about it, why not look into helping around the community, volunteering or setting up clubs or associations etc. There's lots that you could do that would help the situation. Also if you engaged with different people outside of your own family and friends then 1. you might become more compassionate & understand towards the situations that others find themselves in & 2. you might learn & grow yourself as a person (if your open to that). It is far too easy to be a keyboard warrior, sit back & do nothing but moan. But if you put your time and energy into something constructive I guarantee you will feel better about Barnsley & yourself for doing so. :-)
