A BARNSLEY lad who suffered with cancer is on a fundraising mission to give back to the charity who helped him through his illness.

Ben Charlesworth was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in March 2011 - and was immediately put on an intensive course of chemotherapy.

"Teenage Cancer Trust really helped me get through my treatment," said Ben, 20, who works at Barnsley Hospice. "They put me in contact with people going through a similar situation and helped me rebuild a lot of the confidence I'd lost."

A year later, Ben had completed the round, and as an added bonus he had also passed his driving test just a week before.

Since then he's undergone maintenance chemotherapy, but only has to visit Royal Hallamshire Hospital every month. He's now on the path to a full recovery.

"Throughout the illness I have continued to enjoy life as much as I can," said Ben. "I've spent time with friends, partied, and gone on holidays to try not to let it affect me too much."

He now aims to complete a solo skydive from 10,000ft on May 11. For more information, click here.
