Former Pub Transformed

Wednesday May 8 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A FORMER pub has been transformed into the headquarters of a company which helps people with physical and mental problems.

The Gate Inn at Dodworth is now the new headquarters of Aspire in the Community - a private provider of care for people who have learning disabilities, autism and mental health issues.

Sharon Tinsley explained: "Our commitment to 'ordinary living' is a key factor. The service enables people to have greater choice, control and freedom over the support they receive."

The Gate will provide a resource centre, a base for day services, domiciliary and supporting living services plus two self-contained single apartments.

Sharon said: "We would love anyone interested to drop in, to meet with some of our service users and staff and learn about our new services."

Would have been better as a pub and the centre could have been built at nearby capital park instead of using existing community assets

At least it has been put to good use instead of being flattened to build houses no one can get a mortgage for.

It could be worse. You could have a Tesco express on your doorstep. At least it's current use is benefiting the community.

There's a reason it's no longer a pub phil, and that's because it wasn't making any money. As sad as it is, many pubs are going out of business because people aren't spending their money in them anymore. Aspire will make great use of the building.

I agree joanne. we have been conned by the supermarkets over the yrs promoting cheap beer. and bbq??..we were conned by the conservatives demolishing the monopolies on breweries. they knew full well what was going to happen. informing the ppl in the know..to buy pubs. sting the landlords for rent. letting the pubs to fall to pieces..pubs which were spotlessly clean in the day...the pub owners reach a stage where the pub is taking no rent. cos landlords cannot afford the rent. then demolish and build flats. more m oney for the owners of the buildings..the smoking ban didn't help either...I think?
