SEVEN games are all that stand between Penistone Church FC's first team and promotion to the Northern Counties East League.

The 107-year-old club kicked off the campaign with the aim of progressing to the next level but needed to raise £30,000 to improve the standard of facilities at its Church View Road ground.

The necessary work, including new dugouts, boundary fence and seating, has now been completed and awaits the thumbs up from league officials.

Final league position in the County Senior Premier Division will be a determining factor and the side must finish above Aquaforce - the only other team which has applied for promotion.

Dave Hampshire, in his 22nd season as the club's secretary, said the comparison to when he started the role was unbelievable.

"When we took over it was dead on its feet, with debts owed to the council and national insurance," he said.

The side sit well-placed in the table and in contention for the title along with a handful of rivals.

"It's anyone from four really," added Dave. "I think I've said in the past, on our day we can beat anyone in the league; consistency's the key. If we perform to the highest standards in the remaining games, I'm confident we can do it."
