BARNSLEY Council has picked up two accolades for its efforts to keep staff safe at work.

The council is to receive the first of its two awards from the prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) at the Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 on May 16.

The scheme looks at accident records, as well as health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

The second award is the British Safety Council International Safety Award 2013. This scheme enables the British Safety Council to recognise the commitment of organisations, in all sectors and across the globe, to good health and safety management. This award will also be presented in May.

"These awards are a testimony of the council's ongoing commitment to sensible, proportionate, risk based management of health and safety – maintaining the best safety standards for our residents and staff," said Cllr Alan Gardiner.

“To be acknowledged in this way by leading health and safety bodies represents a culmination of the hard work by our managers and staff that have produced a health and safety record of which we are enormously proud."

Dating back 57 years, the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “Barnsley Council has shown that it's committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award."

Its down to the employees who do all the paperwork ie:risk assessment, health & safety, cosh,p&dr reviews, target assessment etc, everything has been passed from above yet the ones at the top get recognition!!!not us with everything on our shoulders, makes me sick!!it will always be them and us,the great divide.wonder who will accept this award?
