BARNSLEY is to at last get a department store after Debenhams announced they will be moving in to the town.

Wilson Bowden and Ashcroft have signed Debenhams as the first anchor store for the Marketplace Barnsley scheme - which is due for completion in 2015

Debenhams will be taking 75,000sq ft on a 25-year lease - it will have two stores and a restaurant.

A spokesman for the company said: "The deal brings to an end Barnsley's record of being the largest town in the UK without a department store."

The town centre plans include a seven-screen cinema, 35 new shops and a new market.

Ashcroft and Wilson Bowden have now appointed property consultants GCW to work alongside Jones Lang LaSalle as joint letting agents on the Marketplace Barnsley scheme.

Looks cold, unwelcoming and basically just like all the other new schemes - you could be anywhere :(

I think it looks great and it's about time Barnsley got with the times!

It's a vast improvement, and credit where it's due to the council for continuing on with this scheme in dificult times. a lot of new buildings are getting criticism for having too much glass on them, I think that they will age better than some previous builds and they are shops after all, they are different as well, I for one am pleased barnsley is getting a much needed facelift. the skyline has been changing the last couple of years for the better after much neglect, now if we could only sort out some of the problem residents of barnsley....

It looks very much like the new Trinity Walk at Wakefield - an L shaped open air mall with Debenhams on the inside corner, but that's how they are these days.

It's good how it opens straight out into established parts of the town centre so they town as a whole can benefit rather than having a self contained shopping centre which kills the rest of the town (anybody been to Doncaster recently?).

What will happen to the Parkway cinema now?
