Half-Mast Flag For Thatcher - Yes Or No?

Tuesday April 9 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

SEVERAL local councils are not flying the flag at half-mast in light of Margaret Thatcher's death.

Do you think this is the right call, WABers? Many councils are, but we've been in contact with Barnsley, Sheffield and Doncaster and they're not planning on doing so.

Join in on our WAB Debate and have your say below.

Sick to death o hearing about the miners strike, for crying out loud it was in 1985, nearly 30yr ago, everybodys banging on about poor miners this poor miners that !!!!, i'm more interested what the goverment can offer my kids, everybodies kids, for the future, it might have been hard times in the 80's but by christ not has bad has it is now or what it's going to be.......... Maggie Thatcher had balls !!! and this is what our goverment needs now......... Not a Sack of Coal !!!!!!!!!!

Cynthia do some reading. You are clearly uneducated in the matter if you have lived in poverty for a full year due to your main bread winner fetching in no money you might have a clue. Then watching the town where you lives biggest employer shut down without any form of recompense or prospects of work left for those on the scrapheap you might think differently.

Always the ones that were unaffected that tell the ones that were to get over it.

The best ever thing that happened to Barnsley was the closure of the pits - it was (and still is) a shit hole, at least know it looks slightly better without all the smog

It shouldn't be a decision about the individual who has died. The question should be what is the norm when a former prime minister dies? We should do the same for Margaret Thatcher, for Tony Blair, for Gordon Brown.

Personally I don't think the flag should be flown at half mast unless a PM dies while in office. I also disagree with Baroness Thatcher having such a lavish funeral with public money & the armed forces involved. Again, this is nothing to do with how I feel about her, it is just a question of fairness and we wouldn't do this for all ex-PMs.

Destroyed mines and other industries round here so that our children and grandchildren have no jobs, brought in council house sales and stopped councils building social housing so that there is a desperate shortage of housing, fought useless wars in Malvinas and Iraq - no wonder there were celebrations in Barnsley and all round South Yorkshire on Monday night. No flags should be flown for someone who tried to destroy our communities - and no spending of £8million to bury her. There are plenty round here would do it for free.

Reply Posted by Guesty Mcguest on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 10:36
No, and when the funeral happens we should just turn our backs. No shouting no swearing, just get on with our work with the dignity that she tried to take away.

I'm amazed that a state funeral can be sanctioned when the country is split down the middle, appalling really it's almost as if half the countries opinions don't matter?

Reply Posted by Mick on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 11:02
There's a very simplistic one sided view of the miners strike on here. The nutter Scargill thought he could bring the government down. He kept the strike going for a year while sacrificing nothing himself. When they went back to work, the govt's closure plans continued unchanged. Both sides were wrong, but the miners could have got a better settlement by negotiating and accepting change had to happen.

Reply Posted by Mary cotterill on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 11:02
No it should not be flown at half mast. Those who don't know about the miners strike shouldn't talk about it yes it was in 1985 but miners never forget. For example Those people that scabed durin the strike they never lose that tag. At end a day she damaged a lot of families....

Reply Posted by Fred on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 11:05
Mines were shut down as it was costing more money to extract the coal than what it could be sold for... and was also cheaper to import it from China.

Any business that is spending more on outgoings than incoming would go bust - the coal industry was making the UK go bust. So she did the country a favour.

I bet all the people that purchased their council houses have not given them up since they found out that the only reason they was allowed to purchase them was down to Margaret Thatcher.

People must be so sad if they hold a grudge on something that happened almost 30 years ago - get a grip and move on !!!!!

Reply Posted by red duster on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 17:13
whattttt do you mean China the coal came from poland russia where the workers were exploited in wage's and working conditions boardering on slavelabour and the she devil became best mates with good old gorby and she would have climbed in to bed with old lucifer if she could have kept the british working class topping their hats to the tory toffs fred if you don't read your political history and get your facts right please don't speculate on something you know jack s----t about

Reply Posted by Graham on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 11:27
I agree with the comments of Mick and Fred.

Coal was significantly cheaper to import from places such as Czechoslovakia and as a consequence the market for home produced coal was diminishing. With the passage of time matters would only have got worse. The miners at the time were of course driving around in their far-east produced Datsuns, purchased because they were cheaper than cars produced in this country. No show of support for workers in the british motor car industry. Hypocrites?

I can afford it and so could Scargill. Tell me, is the NUM still funding his £34.000 Penthouse in London?

Reply Posted by Liam on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 12:44
It was cheaper to import, at the time. Now we import coal, oil, cars and everything else. Now the UAE, China, Germany etc are swimming in money while here in Britain we're in dire straits. Her greed is good culture taught us all the cost of everything but the value of nothing and destroyed the concept of a close community. Evil woman, only cared about the rich. So to answer, no. I firmly believe the flag should stay put.

Reply Posted by Don McCarron on Tuesday April 9 2013 at 12:52
I can't believe some of the the things I'm reading about the pit closures by people who have no idea what they're talking about. Take a look at the prices we're paying today for imported coal. Compare the cost of keeping generations on the dole to temporarily subsidising an industry. Think about the steel and shipbuilding industries.

The Germans are currently enjoying the position that allows them to buy Southern Europe because they MAKE THINGS.

The British are currently facing total bankruptcy because we don't.

One thing Thatcher must have known is that when you denationalise an industry it no longer has any responsibilty to its host country. Instead of a burgeoning manufacturing base we have a crippling welfare state.

That's "Thatcher's legacy".

She was an ICON to me and I will worship her FOREVER.

Back in the 80's during the strike my dad was on strike and my mums factory was on strike. We could not claim benefits and had to queue up for a winter coat and shoes.
My parents went coal picking and we had little fuel for the house which was always cold. We went hungry. Not striking for my parents was not an option or else they would have been ostracised by the community.
They were both hard workers and had a mortgage which had to be left unpaid for 12 months. They have never claimed benefits or lived in council properties and they were brought to their knees.
My dad family worked in the pits for generations and when he was made redundant he became depressed and felt worthless but he did work again for the DSS.
Now those who never went through any of that can say how wonderful Maggie was but people who lived through it and who are still living through it especially as modern Tories are taking away benefits, public sector jobs and sticking unwanted trains through the heart of our countryside are entitled to feel put out.
Just a little bit so no to the flag. She wasn't the Queen or royalty just a stubborn old bat who eventaully lost the rest of her marbles.

No. After 12 months of battling to keep jobs and having the full weight of the British State thrown at you what do you expect. It wssn't a small thing. The money dtied up for small businesses as well. It decimated whole towns not just a few unfortunates. The crime rate in South Yorkshire was one of the lowest in the UK. It destroyed the means of a whole generstion to have self respect and make small choices. I don't talk about it much these days but as the bitch has finally gone to hell, I don't mind remembering her and what she did for my town.If you expected anything else here you are delusional. NO.

Thatcher was ousted out by her own people. Funny now she's dead they all saying what a good PM she was.
She did more damage to this country than Hitler. I remember the miners fight for there rights and that's why today were in this mess. Smash the unions and the working class that's what Thatcher stood for.

So before you say she did a good job that's what millions of people are working for £6.19 per hour and the current Tories are happy for this to continue. Thatcher took away a basic standard of living for the working class and replaced it with poor wages and tax credits tomake ends meet.

Imagration cheap Labour and mass unemployment. Private sell of on BT Gas etc.

Live in hell Thatcher I'm pleased im alive today to share your death.

I live in New Zealand , i am from Penistone and remember well the Miners and related industries pain. Whilst it's honurable to have your countrys economic state at heart and want to change it , the way Margaret Thatcher went about it was disastrous to say the least, disrespecting the people who kept the country running and in employment and keeping all relative buisness thriving . She has caused todays problems in U.K privatisation should have been kept to the british comuninty. As in this country with asset sales , most profits will go offshore to foreign countries , N.Z will be a great place to invest but to live here life is very difficult , the job situation worsens every day. NO Flag . She cared about no one !

This is a day in infamy...The death of Margaret Thatcher.
This is a moment to remember .Margaret Thatcher embodied everything that was elitist to the core in terms of repressing people who had nothing , she presided over a class war and ripped the ass- hole out of my South Yorkshire and beyond with suffering consiquences. It is very important that people get outside in the streets and not allow Government or the media to whitewash what Thatcher and her cronies did , smoothing over the flaws into obliviion. There will be no sympathy from me for what she did to mining communities everywhere.
I will not be sheading tears for her demise.
My father , brother , relatives ,friends and neighbours worked in the mines round the Barnsley area.

Wonderful woman. She took this country from the 'sickman of europe' under Labour to a top five world power economy in just 15 years.

Do you lot remember the rubbish left stacked up on the streets? The power outages? The strikes? The country being held to ramsom by militant unions and left-wing Labour Councils?

BTW, get your facts right. Your beloved Labour goverments shut more pits down than Thatcher and the Tories ever did. Most of you have selective memory.

Get your facts right before you come on here crying you eyes out. Get a grip!!!

She stole our milk, pensions, engineering, she scrapped apprenticeships and replaced them with youth training schemes, introduced legislation which paved the way for an unregulated financial and banking sector which has recently had to be bailed out to the tune of 100 billion.

good bye, good riddance and I'll see you in hell!

Hey Stevo, memories of some people eh?
People have also seemingly forgot the introduction of the hated poll tax (which finally killed off her career), the disregard for the hillborough disaster findings, condemning Mandela as being a terrorist.

She did change the face of politics though didnt she, as such the financial economical and social situations we all find ourselves in now are all a result of the iron ladies politics.

She instilled the greed is good culture amongst the financial elite. - We as a country are bankrupt.
She sold off social housing (which good for many) without building planning to build anymore - Anyone short of a bedroom?
She sold off our services to the lowest bidder - We now have a third world rail infrastructure which is the most expensive in Europe.
She made sure our production and heavy industry was smashed and closed down so we could get cheaper imports - the country no longer exports, and we pay a premium for our power and metal imports.

Experience demands that man is the only animal which devours his own kind, for I can apply no milder term to the general prey of the rich on the poor. - Thomas Jeffereson

Would you like to travel on a bus driven by a driver thats not had a break since starting his shift 8 hours ago?
Would you like a nurse to give you medication when she's not fully trained?
The list goes on............

Do you think everyone should work in sweat shop conditions from any age as they do in India and China?

If it wasn't for the trade union movement workers would have no rights. Just because some trade unions went power mad in the past and lost the plot, you cannot tar all trade unions with this brush. Non extremist strong trade unions are needed today as much as they ever were. Any decent employer will tell you this.
I really can't be bothered to begin to try and educate you on the world of work, you sound like a lost cause. How very ignorant and uneducated you are.

Should we fly the flag at half mast following the passing of Baroness Thatcher.

Of course we should. She was one of the finest Prime Ministers we have ever had. She unshackled the British people and gave them hope for the future. The vast majority of people had their lives changed for the better, although many people are too ignorant and uneducated to appreciate it.

People really do have short memories. The dead left unburied, rubbish left piled up in the streets, the nationalised utilities each losing hundreds of millions of pounds each and every year. Strikes brought about by extreme left-wing trades union leaders who were following their own agenda and not those of their members. Oh yes, I remember it well.

It is a great shame that Baroness Thatcher is not alive today and forty years younger. She would sort out the mess left behind by the last Labour government and put the 'Great' back in Britain as she did before.

Incidentally, I suspect that most of the people on here spewing their bile are real deadbeats. You only have to observe their spelling to see that.

Give Baroness Thatcher a send off with full honours. She was a truly great leader.

The only people who had their lives changed for the better were her Tory party cohorts and their "business" interests, the average working man got nothing from Thatcher apart from de-nationalisation, unemployment mega inflation and 19% interest rates.

As for your comment about her sorting out the "mess " that Labour have left, it was her who started the rot with her near sighted policies the likes of which have ruined our country indefinitely.

Her own party turned on her because she was too arrogant and still though she could bully her Tory counterparts her ultimate undoing was the poll tax.

Remember that one?
Or were you more than happy to pay it?

Take off your rose coloured glasses mr Tory.

If you want to send her off with full honours then I suggest you pay for it.

Charles,
I'm here to stay so get used to it baby!
As for education, I am an M.A.
As for you I could think of a few letters I could add to the end of your name.

Reply Posted by stevo on Thursday April 11 2013 at 07:04
Funny that, I cant ever recall saying the word "uneducated" in any of my posts.
I do like rhetoric though and have used populous quite a few times.

I wonder if people are getting me mixed up with another poster? hmmm

Dawn....................calm down dear.
I'm not stevo and stevo isn't me.
Thankfully you and I appear not to work at the same place ( thank you God ).

You appear not to be able to accept that more than one person disagrees with your views.
When someone does disagree with your views you lose control and lash out. Very worrying.
Have you ever been tested for paranoia?
I'm done here anyway, I really can't be bothered with you, you are living proof that ' you can't educate pork '.

Well said Ben, lets get it over and done with, damn shame about the £10million though! Why dont all the tory boys chip in, the Barclay brothers who own the Ritz have been putting her up for free since Christmas, they could foot the bill.

Margaret Thatcher was far too extreme in her views and her ways, she lacked the human touch, was devoid of compassion and understanding.
No wonder huge swathes of the country are turning their backs on any tributes to her.
She did not represent good strong determined women, she was never that herself , she was just hard as nails.
Eventually her own tory party realised she was too extreme and they got rid of her.
Unfortunately not before she had done great harm.
I will be glad when the TV and newspapers get back to normal, but I doubt they will for a time. The high profile £10 million funeral will see to that.

It's too easy to make excuses in todays society, The pits shut down 30+. years ago. Other mining towns/ Citys have moved on, why can't the people of Barnsley? There are jobs out there, travel if you have to, I do.

dawn seems like a hitler \ stroke thatcher. dawn. what stevo says is true. its because of bastard thatcher that the unions are a little less powerful. because they| you didnt like it when the little people jumped up and kicked you on the ankles. you should alaways support the union. bcos you never know one day you may need them. bear that in mind. if you dont like what the union does. get involved. as stevo quite riughtly pointed out. should we have the flag flying at hal mast????...NO.

I missed a fun night last night by the look of things. :D

Stevo seems to be like Arthur Scargill, a Nutter! You're like his little puppy dog Observer.

I'll give Dawn credit where credit its due. She didn't half put stevo in his place. What a weak man he turned out to be,eh! Just like Scargill!

@stevo- Im glad you're hanging around, it wouldn't be the same without the resident clown!

Charles the troll, last week you accused me of jealousy ... hmmm.. I think that should be the other way round my tory loving friend.

See you later, I have a strike to prepare.....

Stevo: Just to let you know that the above postings by someone called Charles in the last couple of days are not my postings. You will recall that you and I had an exchange on a matter earlier in the week. The person posting under the same name is someone else. Hope you understand what I am saying.

Anyway, having said that, I fully agree that Margaret Thatcher deserves great respect for the work that she did on behalf of Great Britain. She was perhaps the finest Prime Minister of all time. As Graham above has said we could do with a Margaret Thatcher now to get the country out of the mess which we are now in.

Yes we have a proud mining heritage but we can't be held prisoner by that, and we can't keep hankering back to it. Ex- miners and the people of Barnsley are their own worst enemy, wasting their life siting on it in a WMC.

dawn and neil. i think there is no place for you on here. clearly you are deluded on your thoughts. and are not old enought to know what happened...dawn, when the ambulance drivers submitted a pay rise claim in that era. kenneth clarke said.."they are only..!!! glorified taxi drivers."..maybe you should take on board what is being discussed on here. the tories are evil. and always will be. i would suggest neil and dawn are also well off and a pair of "im alright jacks.". and didnt have hardship as others in the discussion have had. also....will the real fred. and stevo. and other cloners. please stand up...lol.

Reply Posted by Dawn on Friday April 12 2013 at 15:18
Oh God, not you again. Will you wash your mouth out with soapy water, how dare you speak about Baroness Thatcher in that tone. I can't speak for neil, but there will always be a place for me here, mark my word. The people of Labour Barnsley need educating and im the one to do it!

Deluded? I would say Scargill and the Socialist Worker were deluded, don't you think? I will always remember those pictures of big nose Scargill and his muppets walking round holding up placards with the message "Victory To The Miners"

That turned out to be a bit embarrasing don't you think?

Reply Posted by Dawn on Friday April 12 2013 at 15:22
You're right on one thing though. Me and my family are pretty well off. I just go to work for something to do. My husband earns enough for the both of us.

You want locking up! never mind tryin to educate Barnsley folk!

Reply Posted by Dawn on Sunday April 14 2013 at 07:59
New name? Do you think the average Barnsley person would go through 4 years of hard training, studying and exams, etc, etc? We're not talking about stacking supermarket shelves you know!

Anyway, the NHS are crying out for staff, so once again, get your facts right. ;)

Reply Posted by Dawn on Sunday April 14 2013 at 08:48
Don't you think they need educating piggy? I remember Tony Benn MP (who closed more pits down than Thatcher and the Tories ever did) addressing a load of miners in Wakefield in the early 70s. Many were virtually starving (due to strikes/disputes) whilst he was a happy champagne socialist. Sadly many of them were taken in by him in those days!

Thatcher and her goverment inherited a struggling coal industry.

Reply Posted by paul on Sunday April 14 2013 at 09:30
Just like the people of barnsley being taken in by scargill. For example you just have to look on barnsley fc footymad to see how stupid these people are. They have no idea!

Reply Posted by Spider pig on Sunday April 14 2013 at 18:53
Slightly contradictory there Dawn.

So your not from Barnsley or not average then?

I would say working for the NHS then you are definitely average.

Reply Posted by Dawn on Monday April 15 2013 at 08:41
Nick, you can't eductate pork! No pun intended piggy.

Reply Posted by observer on Friday April 12 2013 at 14:07
oh one other thing dawn. as for scargill and his other home. that has been a long standing hjome passed down to leaders over the years. lots of years. ok have a go at what the leaders of unions are paid. you have to fight fire with fire. i dont suppose you are going to put on here how much the thatcher bastard was earning at the same time would you?..or her govt?..or even erhaps, how much it cost for the animal to die in the ritz hotel on that happy day, when she could have re-coopereated in the hospital where she had the op. or even at home. so, apart from the 8 million its costing to burn the rotten bovine, who paid for it all?????....explain.

Where would that get you? You really do need help andy and move on. Before you know it you'll be dead. Try and get a life for your own sake.

Maggie's life hasn't been cut short, she's had a good innings. She coudn't care less what people thought of her when she was alive. Do you think she does now, now she's dead. I opened the chronicle on friday and what did I see. A bunch of deadbeats toasting her death outside a pub. Why wern't they at work. This is the society of today im affraid.
