A POLICE investigation is underway after a man covered in soot and blood was found laid on the ground outside a Worsbrough Common house that was engulfed in flames.

Mystery surrounds what happened at the property on Bank Street, but neighbours said they believed the man had tried to kill himself.

It's believed the injured man had been working on the new property which is not completed. He's now being treated in hospital but is not seriously injured.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said she and her partner had put him into the recovery position and called for an ambulance.

She said: "I noticed smoke and I saw the neighbours over the road and they were talking so I went over to see what was going on and that's when I saw the bloke laid out on the floor."

"He was taken to hospital in an ambulance and had cuts all over his fingers. He was responding though and let us put him in the recovery position. I'm in shock really and we're all a bit shook up by it all."

Owner Glenn Freeman, said the property was still being developed and was about two-thirds finished, with work still to be done inside.

"It's not been cheap and now I am stood here and my house is burnt. The guy who was inside was working for me - he was a window fitter. I have no idea what has happened, I'm still in the dark myself and waiting to hear from the police."

A spokeswoman for the South Yorkshire force said CID officers were looking into the incident and further enquiries were still ongoing in order to ascertain the cause of the fire.
