Athersley Minibus Firm Ordered To Halve Its Fleet

A MINIBUS firm has been ordered to halve its fleet after it was discovered that a vehicle which took children to school did not have a valid MOT.

Deputy traffic commissioner Elizabeth Perrett also heard that Athersley-based B Smart Travel Ltd was employing drivers that did not have the right licences to transport passengers.

Ms Perrett's ruling – which cuts the company’s licence from eight to four vehicles – came after an inquiry held in Leeds.

B Smart Travel directors Pamela Smart and Brian Smart appeared before the traffic commissioner to respond to the findings of a traffic examiner from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

In July last year, one of the company’s vehicles was examined at Greenacre School in Kingstone as children were leaving the bus.

During the inspection, the VOSA officer identified the driver did not hold the right class of licence to drive the vehicle, and further enquiries revealed the vehicle’s MOT had expired.

After hearing further evidence from the directors and transport manager Jennifer Hughes, Ms Perrett said she was satisfied their systems had now been tightened up.

She ruled that its reputation as an operator had been tarnished by the failures reported by VOSA and recorded a formal warning on the company’s licence.

Ms Perrett’s order to cut the fleet in half with immediate effect means the business can now only operate four vehicles.

I can guarantee 99% of mini buses are driven on the wrong licence many drivers believe its just a car licence but when your doing it for reward (money) it's a bus licence.

half it's fleet?? why not closed until ALL the vehicles/drivers/owners have been safety checked?? Oh wait I get it... Is Ms Perrett waiting for an accident to happen first, then act accordingly..?...
