MORE than £250,000 in Environment Agency funding has been given to Barnsley Council for flood protection works to be carried out to homes in Bolton-on-Dearne.

The money - which totals £274,000 - will be used as part of the EA's Property Level Flooding Protection (PLP) scheme.

A spokeswoman for Barnsley Council, which applied for the funding last year, said the cash will be used on houses overcome by the floodwaters of 2007.

The main aim of the scheme is to minimise the risk of future flooding to some 60 properties, including homes in Riverside Gardens, Mill Race Drive, Fox Covert Close, Lowfield Road and Meadowgates.

At the time of the bid for the funding, Cllr Roy Miller was pleased at the proposed works, and said they were 'much needed' in the Dearne.

"These works are a positive move by Barnsley Council in supporting residents in this area," he said.

Good stuff and Barnsley Council got their application in nice and early 5 years after the event.

Gusty - Just explain how the application process and procedure works in order that we can fully understand the Councils 'delay in applying' for this or is it just a cheap shot?
