Public Drinking Ban For Outskirts Of Centre Is Approved

Drinking ban approved Drinking ban approved

A PUBLIC drinking ban covering the outskirts of the town centre has been approved following months of consultation with residents.

Police made the application for 96 streets in Oakwell, Old Mill, Honeywell and Dearne Valley Park in November amid concerns a town centre ban had pushed drinkers into the suburbs.

Chairman of Barnsley Council's licensing board, Cllr Charlie Wraith, said residents had been consulted on the plans - with the majority saying they were in favour to ban drinking on the streets where they live.

"Drinking bans have proved to be successful in the past and I've no fears of it causing any problems," he said. "The majority of ward members were in favour."
