BARNSLEY hosted the premiere of the new BBC Two documentary about ancient Egypt.

The first ever screening of the show was held in the council chamber in the Town Hall. It was followed by a question and answer session with the Barnsley-born Egyptologist Dr Joann Fletcher, who wrote and presents the programme.

Dr Fletcher persuaded BBC producers to have the screening in her home town rather than London.

BBC head of history Martin Davidson attended, along with Bill Locke of Lion Television - which has one of the most respected history programme units in the industry.

Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis and town Mayor Cllr Dorothy Higginbottom were also among guests.

Mr Locke described Dr Fletcher's style as 'straight-talking' and Mr Davidson said she was 'wonderful, exceptional and brilliant'.

He added: "She is a bit of a star, and in 20 years time we'll be able to tell people that we were here."

The show, 'Ancient Egypt: Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings,' traces the lives of an ancient Egyptian architect and his wife.

The couple's tomb was undisturbed for almost 3,000 years until it was found, intact and packed with antiquities and personal items like jewellery, perfume and make-up.

The show will be aired on Friday, March 22 at 9pm.

I watched this programme with Joann Fletcher I really enjoyed it. I have a great interest in Ancient Egypt. Her programme was both informative and really gave the viewer insight into this couple who lived 3.000 years ago. They were not royalty but I think the husband was overseer and master builder of a Kings tomb . Dr Fletcher has such passion when she talks about Ancient Egypt but is not to academic she puts it into laymans terms so non-experts can understand what she is trying to convey.I saw her a few years ago in a programme about Queen Nefertiti and two other mummies found in the tomb. Dr Fletcher was sure that one of the mummies was in fact Nefertiti. I hope that Dr Fletcher doe other programmes on Ancient Egypt she is a very talented Lady.
