Kes Star Visits Kirk Balk

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

KIRK Balk Community College welcomed a special visitor when Kes star Dai Bradley came to the school.

Dai, who famously played Billy Casper in the classic Ken Loach film, spoke to pupils about the making of the movie and his iconic character.

He's hoping to inspire pupils to achieve their ambitions.

Dai said: "There are many Billy Caspers, some that are in Kirk Balk because they're in every school. They are not alien and there are ways and means of breaking out of that mentality where you think life is not worth putting the effort into."

Dai said he has many fond memories of the area from shooting the film including Bell Woods near Hoyland and The Harbour chip shop in Hoyland Common.

"They were bloody good chips," he said.

His appearance forms part of Made in Hoyland and The Hoyland Big Read - a project throughout March celebrating the area and a Kestrel For A Knave with free events at Hoyland Library and Kirk Balk school.

Iconic film, funny, emotional, realistic, of its time. All secondary school children should have the chance to watch this film in school. I think they would laugh so much at some of the school scenes, and feel so sad at other parts of the film. I think it would touch them all even today. It would certainly get them thinking, maybe inspire new writers and actors.Fabulous actors, brilliant story.

Fails to mention that the writer of 'A Kestral for a Knave' (the book on which 'Kes' is based) was a teacher at Kirk Balk school and wrote the book in the school library.
