Children Choose Pedal Power

Thursday February 28 2013

CHILDREN are choosing pedal power for the school run - and they have a brand new bike shelter to celebrate.

Pupils at Goldthorpe's Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School have opened their new shelter - provided by Barnsley Council.

Sustrans 'Bike It' officer Amanda Sowerby has worked with the school since October 2012.

She said: "The new storage means pupils can rely on their bikes being safe and dry when they go to cycle home. Children are supposed to get at least one hour of physical activity a day, and cycling or walking to school is a great start."

Last Tuesday, pupils, parents and siblings who came to school on their bikes got a free breakfast, and left their bikes with 'Dr Bike' for a check up.

Children dressed brightly, demonstrating how to be seen and be safe, and there was a special assembly for the Big Pedal challenge - the UK’s biggest school cycling competition that's starting on February 28.
