MIDWIVES at Barnsley Hospital missed out on a top maternity award from the prestigious Royal College Of Midwives.

They had been shortlisted in the 'Maternity Services of the Year' category and were up against The Ipswich Hospital and Powys Teaching Health Board.

They attended an awards ceremony in London last Thursday, but lost out to the team from Ispwich.

Sue Gibson, head of midwifery at Barnsley Hospital said it was ''an honour to have been shortlisted and was a tribute to hard working staff.''

The hospital's had a great start to 2013. Last week, we reported that they had been awarded £748,482 in funding from the Department of Health to improve facilities on their maternity unit.

The midwives at Barnsley hospital are extremely polite and they took care of me and my little girl so well back I'm September. To say I was only 15 they understood me so well. They deserve much more than an award more like a payrise. In my opinion they can't do anything any better than they do already.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank barnsley midwives for delivering me. A job well done

I agree with the woman about the phones. She told my mother i was having braxton hicks an hour before i had to start pushing because i was fully dialated. Good job i made it to the hospital because i had a complicated birth! And my child was at risk. The midwife who delivered my child - fantastic. The ones who were left on the ward with me and the other females all night were quite appauling. They had an attitude and they never once helped me to get cleaned or anything as i had to have very deep stitches so i couldnt move to clean after i had my child. So they do need better facilities for people in that situation too
