McKenzie's Holiday Takes A Step Closer

Monday October 3 2011

A TERMINALLY ill boy is being sent on what could be his last holiday next week.

Little McKenzie Yates is just four years old, but he has an inoperable brain tumour. Doctor's told his family last week that chemotherapy is no longer working for the tot and that it was just a matter of time before he lost his battle with the illness.

Already, McKenzie has won the support of locals who rallied around to arrange a surprise birthday for him and even took him to Oakwell to meet his favourite players from Barnsley FC.

And now Joanne Heywood, from the When You Wish Upon A Star charity, has stepped in to offer a holiday to Center Parcs for the family. The charity has also provided £300 worth of vouchers for the family to spend while they are they - and the Barnsley Hackney Carriage Association will be providing transport free of charge.

Joanne said: “We have just returned to the office having met the unbelievably brave McKenzie Yates and his very special mum, some of you will have read about him at We Are Barnsley. We have presented him with a £500 trip to Centerparcs and have bought £300 of vouchers for him and his family to enjoy whilst there.
"The guys at the Barnsley Hackney Carriage Association are providing transport free of charge but is there a business out there who would donated the camera and card for them so they can record their precious memories of what may well be a final family holiday?"

McKenzie's Centerparcs trip will be to the Sherwood Forest site, on October 14 - 17 - if anyone can help please contact Joanne on 01472 827100 or email: joanne@whenyouwish.org.uk

I'm afraid it has to be a licensed vehicle Heather due to the charity's insurance requirements. Thanks for your offer though.

I can't believe one of the bigger local firms hasn't jumped in to do this small favour for a good cause. Centerparcs Sherwood Forest is only an hour away to earn a million charitable brownie points.
