THANKS to Barnsley Hospital’s research team a new ground-breaking drug is now available to combat strokes.

The new life-saving pill, Eliquis (Apixaban), has recently been approved by the European Medicines Agency and can be now be used for patients with an irregular heart beat to prevent a stroke.

Barnsley Hospital’s Dr Albazzaz, a stroke physician and key part of the development team for the drug, said: “Eliquis thins the blood like traditional stroke medication, but now patients can benefit from not having to undergo routine blood tests and their diets do not need to be restricted whilst using it.''
