MP Gives Thoughts On Grimethorpe Colliery Band

Friday February 1 2013

MP MICHAEL Dugher has given his thoughts on the Grimethorpe Colliery Band's new funding.

As we reported earlier, the famous band's future looks a lot brighter after two donations.

“After weeks of campaigning, I'm pleased they've received new funding. Well done to Plusnet and A Shade Greener for deciding to support the band who make such an important contribution to our community and indeed the whole country.“

Just last month, Mr Dugher was one of four MPs who wrote a joint letter to the Minister for Culture, Ed Vaizey, calling for an urgent meeting to discuss the funding and future of brass bands.

The letter argued that there was an ''inequality in funding between different musical art forms.''

In 2011/12, the Arts Council allocated funding totalling £26million to the Royal Opera House in London and the English National Ballet received £6.4million. In comparison, the organisation responsible for supporting 458 brass band groups nationwide, the British Federation of Brass Bands (now Brass Bands England), only received £23,000.
