A BARNSLEY headteacher has been put in charge of a project that aims to get thousands of school children to become more fit and active.

Nick Bowen, the principal at Horizon Community College, has been appointed chairman of the South Yorkshire School Games.

The project will see trampolining, orienteering, judo and seated volleyball offered to schools who sign up to take part after the event last year attracted 2,500 pupils.

A one-day festival is planned for Shaw Lane Sports Club in Barnsley in July, with stand alone events being planned at Wentworth Castle.

What do you think could be done to encourage more children to get fit? Have your say in the comment box below.

Well done Nick. Obviously if 2500 pupils attended last year it's a great boost for fitness in Barnsley!

If parents stopped overfeeding their kids on rubbish and made them play out instead of sitting in front of the TV then schools would not have to do parents jobs!

A fantastic idea, i know my kids would access this and know a lot more that would too. Providing something more exciting to the children in Barnsley. Well done Mr Bowen!!

I think it's a great idea......although folk will be judgemental. There seems to be lots of choice and kids will get fit if there is someting that they enjoy. Well done Mr Bowen - let's hope our senior school gets on board too! :-)
