Cash Office Axed Due To Budget Cuts

Tuesday January 8 2013

THE COUNCIL cash office based at the Civic is to be axed under the latest round of budget cuts.

From the beginning of March, locals will no longer be able to pay for their rent, council tax or water bills at the Civic office.

The council said the cost of processing cash and cheque payments is too expensive when compared to direct debits and internet payments.

right so they closed down the local ones, eg roundhouse, so you couldnt pay there anymore and were sent to the civic to pay and now they closing the civic down so you cant pay there. so basically you pay by direct debit or ring up everyweek and get put on hold for an hour? yeah clever council!!

If you haven't got a bank account, just get a payment card to use at the 'pay-points' in most shops. They're everywhere. Just same as topping up a mobile or gas/electric.

Whilst I accept direct debits and internet payments and an online world are the future they are not for everyone. I feel for those who simply can't handle technology, no matter how much coaching, and are having their independance taken away from them.

what about the old people who are in o.a.p bugalows and such a lot of them do not have bank account's they prefer to handle thier own cash , and who now will deal with all the enquiries ? maybe if you stopped spending money stupid on car parks at the side of town hall and refurbing the town hall into a museum that no one has the time to visit because we are now all working overtime to pay our council tax

Another alternative would have been to make a charge for using cash or cheque payments to absorb the extra costs. If the idea of using all the other options is so bad, would it be reasonable to pay £1 to make a payment at a council office?

Move into the future people you'll be expecting them to accept shillings next.

Isnt it funny..
They cant afford to pay the costs of the Civic, But they can afford to put Four Seperate police Bikes / Bikers behind the mayors car for 3 hours to and from Doncaster yesterday.

Wouldnt they have been saving cash by putting 2 officers in a eco-friendly car and saving on Man-hours, wages and Petrol costs?
Flaming idiots .

People such as my grandparents prefer to make the trip to the civic just so they have proof and assurance they have paid their bills on time.
This is BMBC 's stupidity at its best.

Have the Councillors take a pay cut of say, £1000 a year per counc. - that'd easily allow for us to keep the civic.

get shut of some counclors why do we need three per ward when one would do but its the people of barnsleys fault for keep voting labour every time so you get people in power that think their untouchable

The council have been trying to get rid of cash payment centres for years despite this being unpopular with many tax payers. No doubt they will be able to blame Tory cuts for this decision, but with a town that will vote Labour under any circumstance what can anybody do but moan.??? Until Barnsley tax payers wake up to that fact, the council will just continue doing as they please regardless of public opinion.!!!

They can't afford it because they are spending the money on a nice big fountain at the side of the town hall for all the local drunks on Friday/Saturday night to pee in a £1m toilet well done barnsley council
