Scores of Royston Families Take Legal Action Against Coke Plant

Friday January 4 2013

MORE than 100 families in Royston have launched a legal battle against a coke plant which they say is keeping them from enjoying their own homes.

The 111 families have instructed solicitor's firm Hugh James to take on their case because they claim the site - operated by The Monckton Coke and Chemical Company - has caused serious odour and dust problems since 2004 which means that they are unable to open their doors and windows or use their gardens.

Gwen Evans of Hugh James said: “The evidence we have seen suggests that residents have been exposed to an unacceptable level of dust and odour from the site.

“People in these circumstances are entitled to compensation for what they have suffered in the past, and an injunction to prevent the continuation of this nuisance in future."

An open day is due to be held about the complaint at Royston Civic Hall on January 15 from 2 - 8pm.
