Warning Issued As Black Ice Sets In

Friday December 14 2012

MOTORISTS and pedestrians have been warned of problems affecting hundreds of roads in Barnsley after sheet ice froze them overnight.

Thick black ice is already causing big problems on the regions roads with the A1/M1 already having closures due to 17 separate crashes.

Woodhead pass is closed due to the weather conditions and police and road safety officers have already taken to social media sites to warn the public about the treacherous conditions.

Chief Supt Jason Harwin tweeted: "Warning - road conditions throughout South Yorkshire are terrible. Please seriously consider if you need to travel."

According to the Met Office the ice has been caused by a downpour of freezing rain throughout the night.

A spokesman added: "That happens when rain droplets fall through air thats temperature is below zero and freezes on impact with the ground or another object to form clear ice – also known as glaze. Conditions have to be ‘just right’ to get freezing rain and it doesn’t happen very often in the UK, making it a relatively rare phenomenon."

Police have reported their call centre has had almost 300 extra calls between 6-8am this morning. They are reminding people to call 999 only if life is at risk or crime is in progress. Everything else is 101.

She does not listen to anyone, that is the problem. I live at Kendray and we cannot even get off our road, it is sheet ice, does she care NO. I would rather my children lose their 100% and be safe, then be killed in condition that are terrible. Shame on the Headteacher of Shafton ALC, lets name and shame them.

To the peep that said they've not seen any gritters....you won't cos there's no use in putting grit down on top of ice and would you really want the gritter trucks out in this? I wouldn't want one of those sliding about on the road!

Reply Posted by Barry Smith on Friday December 14 2012 at 09:38
You are spot on Helen, we need the warmer temperature to come with the rain and that will help us out. But boy it is bad out there and the school that are trying to open at 10am need their head examining.

Millhouse green is dangerous at the moment, is there a point in gritters?? Yes there is the grit contains salt which in turns melts the ice, a gritter wieghs that much if its driven steady it can main routes fine, local streets should be via grit boxes by local people! What happened to everyone helping each other out? Sure if we all mucked in council included it would just be another cold day!!

I was up at 6 gritting our terrace. The grit has cleared most of the ice, if everyone staying at home today just gritted the road outside their own houses it would soon clear up. Instead they just moan about council not doing owt.

Reply Posted by Barry Smith on Friday December 14 2012 at 10:22
where have you got a magically supply of grit from, we have just had a Van stuck outside our house and someone has had to come in a 4 wheel drive with some rock salt, so why are so special?

Reply Posted by dave on Friday December 14 2012 at 10:15

I live and work in penistone and the roads on the estates are horrendous; pavements are even worse!

Main road is ok in parts, but still icy in others - I haven't seen any gritters on my walk to work (I literally couldn't even de-frost the car as it was too thick with ice and I had no chance of getting it off my ice rink estate anyway!)

Got to work and received a call from my Mum (who lives on park ave in penistone), to say that someone has come round the corner in a car, slid off the road, mounted the kerb, ploughed her fence down, smashed into her garden, then promptly reversed and drove off!!!
This was only half an hour ago, and yet I've just had a text from St Johns school saying school will be re-opening at 10.30 and to take care on the roads!!! Given that the roads to the school are sheet ice (park ave is the school route for many people) - is it worth the risk trying to get children to school??!! NO!!!

roads and footpaths in dodworth are horrendous but a big thumbs up to council workers gritting the footpaths by hand, i suppose it wont happen everywhere and some areas wont be gritted but i think they deserve credit where its due.

Well Kirsty not every1 has a yellow grit bin!! But due to you having access to one why not go grit everyone's path who doesn't have access to one instead of pulling others down???

we don't have yellow grit bins, they were removed when we had bad snow 2 years ago, the council have never replaced them!

Penistone side streets are horrendous! Can't even get down my front steps without sliding all over!! I am definately not risking taking my child to school in this, its way to dangerous!

a massive" thank you " to those people who stood in their windows and watched as my car slid down into a cul de sac and got stuck and could not move due to the ice, i had scared children in the car screaming thinking we were crashing. it makes me think why i should offer assistance to poor souls i have come across in the past and helped them out of a sticky situation. where is the christmas spirit.

So we pay all this money council tax so why r the roads and pavements so bad . Seen 1 grifter in 2 weeks typical

Stephen, hope the kids were ok. There doesnt seem to be any Xmas spirit, or community spirit any more.

I have helped a young girl this morning she was about 14/15. We live on an estate in Darfield that has a very steep corner and she slipped over and bashed her face. My neighbour got her a towel to sit on and a tissue for her face and I tiptoed over in my socks and slipper socks cos it was safer than my boots and got her my daughter hand made red Barnsley fleece to try and warm her up a bit and talked to her to calm her down until her friends dad came for her. She didnt want to move she just wanted to go home... which is fair enough. All I got was wet feet but at least someone was there for her until a lift came. I have since used the last of our cat litter to grit some of the street. Thankfully it's warmed up a bit and the ice has started to melt.

I just think the world would be a better place if we all just looked out for each other a little bit.

I went to cineworld last night and on my way home at around 7pm gritters and salt sprayers were out in force, trouble is it was wet and foggy so half of it would have dissolved or washed away, and i agree with the people that said gritters shouldn't be out, if one of them slides into you or your vehicle the results wouldn't be pretty. as for "where is the community spirit" its right here on this page, with everyone advising each other where is bad and where is closed ect we are all just going to have to wait for nature to smile on us again and stay as safe as we can in the meantime.

well, i attempted to leave for work at half past five this morning, only for my car to get stuck just a few yards from my house. the whole street was a sheet of ice. fearing that someone else would try to drive on the street and have an accident, i parked my car by the side of the road and spent the next 4 hours waiting for the neighbours to come out of their houses to warn them about the ice, i helped one guy push his car out of the way after getting stuck, we helped a pensioner who had fallen on the ice to get him home, after four hours of helping out i have come in to warm up. the community spirit is still alive and well in a lot of people here in carlton village.

Nice one Lee. I think a lot of good things have been happening from the community today. And Lesley it's true a lot of people are on here warning others of problems. There more goodness and kindness than people think. There's more in Barnsley than anywhere else in the UK!
