Locals Step In To Save WMC

Thursday December 13 2012

LOCALS have stepped in to save a historic working men's club which closed last month.

Five members of Elsecar Midland Working Men's Club have clubbed together to rescue it, overhauling both its interior and exterior.

Darren Fieldsend, a member of the syndicate said the club, which dates back to the early 1900s, will reopen on December 15 under the new name of Cobcar Sports and Social Club.

He said: "It needed investment in it and it just needs livening up.

"It's got to stay as part of the community; it's still there and we just need to use it."

Darren said he wanted the club to cater for everyone - with singers on to entertain the older members of the community, live bands and a ladies' club on offer.
