£15m Benefits To Be Lost For Barnsley People

Sunday September 25 2011

Dan Jarvis MP Dan Jarvis MP

THOUSANDS of people across Barnsley face having their benefits axed in a move that is expected to take £15m out of the local economy.

MP Dan Jarvis revealed to We Are Barnsley this week that - under new cuts proposed by the government - the cuts to the Disability Living Allowance could have a crippling effect on town.

The reforms will mean that some people who are currently able to claim will have their benefits axed and will be unable to get them in future.

He said: "Government are making a whole series of changes to the benefit system and it looks as if the changes will mean that £15 million that would have otherwise come in to the Barnsley economy will be lost.

"That's a huge amount of money - that's £15 million that would have been paid to people living in Barnsley who would have spent that money in the town. The reality is you can't just take that amount of money out of our economy without noticing a significant impact. The cuts that are being made are going to hit really hard.

"People have got long memories in the town, they remember the difficulties of coping with the miner's strike 25 years ago and I know that people in Barnsley are already feeling the pinch. Times are tough and sadly they are going to get worse.

"If an individual is able to work , then they must work and go out and contribute to society but there are lots of people who are not able to work and a lot of these are etxremely fearful of the fact that they are going to lose benefits to what they are legitimately entitled to."

It's about time people realised that benefits are not a right. It's not theres to be taken away, it's a benefit. Some of these people have been claiming benefits for years and years, if we are in this together let's be in this together. I have'nt had a pay rise in 2 yr's, so why should people get benefits....................

Rachel is right, there are people who are on benefits through no fault of their own that can't actually work, taking away things like disability living allowance means these people can't afford to do the basic things that everyone else takes for granted. The DLA is there to ensure that those who are disabled can have the same standard of life as everyone else.

If people are genuinely unable to work, then they are the people this system was set up to help and no-one begrudges them that. Unfortunately, so many people have abused the system, claiming benefits due to chronic idleness, that it spoils it for the genuine claimants. I just hope there is a fair and realistic way of differentiating between the two types of claimant.

£15 million spent in town? More like spent on dodgy cigs, cheap nasty ale and crap from pound shop. I'm sure the REAL people who need benefits will still get what they deserve - the other scroungers will av to do what everyone else does - work for a living

its a mental issue for 1 person i know cos they convinced themselves they are disabled when they are not.. they are just idle and thinks they have the right to claim poppycock get a job i hope they stop the benefit for these people that are pulling the wool over the drs eyes like the one i know

These changes are being forced on the wrong people like the mental health patients who physically are fit but mentally are not. These mentally ill patients are being forced back to work when they are not able to cope, this is going to increase suicide rates, self harm rates which means more work for the NHS and husbands/wifes will die and mums & dads will die, children will die leaving behind loved ones because of suicide.  More people will have a criminal recored as a lot of mental health patients can not control their temper and will end up being violent (NHS dont section violent mental health patiants only patients who self harm police have to deal with patients).  The mentally ill often want to work but are unable they go back to  work then end up having a mental breakdown.

like the people who i know who claim because they cant walk but can manage to walk round town shopping nearly every day. These people deserve to have their money stopped only real people with disabilities should get it.

there are no jobs i'm a mother of two boys 1 being 14yrs the other 11month i'm  highly qualified and experienced in my line of work but can't get a job. The jobcentre has been trying to get me back to work since my little 1 was 3 months. It isn't as tho i haven't worked i have i'm 37 and worked and put money in to this country since i was 16. Its a disgrace council cutbacks what they do is penalise children first by not letting them go swimming for free now the disabled. The system is wrong if you are a registered alcoholic or drug user you are entitled to extra money if you are foreign you don't have to work so if you are a kosovan alcoholic smackhead everyday is giro day

its ok saying they have to work i agree they should reform benefits like getting people off the dole but first they should have jobs there in the first place send all the east europians back to there own country,s this would open up the job market a little .they are not wanted not needed we need to look after our own people a little more if this means to come out of the europian union then so be it .....

Those people who claim DLA and know they are claiming it when they should not, should be ashamed of themselves!!

Those people who blame foreigners for taking all the jobs wake up, same old rubbish blaming someone else, come up with another one.

Give the benefits to the needy not the scroungers who can not be arsed to get out of bed. You know who you are!!!

Reply Posted by Melvinmcgrath on Sunday September 25 2011 at 10:07
i suggest you wake up and look around in every factory every work place in the uk has a big east europian input of workers i,m not suggesting they are to blame and yes we have scroungers and we need to deal with that problem ive worked for 35 years ive children that want work but are finding it difficult we should look after our own people first polish workers have more rights than british workers at the moment this would happen anywhere else if this sounds racist sorry its not

And in the meantime HMRC continue to waste hundreds of millions, if not billions of pounds, by wiping out old claims, also by one department paying back tax, whilst the person who has got the tax back, owes tax money to another department.
If the government really wants to be seen as doing what is right, then surely this mess at the HMRC has got to be sorted out ? totally stupid ||||

Genuine Disability = Benefit paid.

Fake Disability = Benefit stopped.

Work shy/Scroungers = Benefit stopped.

the tories are the scroungers and the real enemy, they want to ruin the lives of many in order to line the pockets of few, they tell us that we're all in it together whilst letting their rich banker mates pay themselves 9 million pound bonuses, when David Cameron has never worked in his life but is still a millionaire, he raises tuition fee's and tells students they need to pay for their education out of their own pockets when mummy and daddy paid for him to go to eton and cambridge, this is class war we need the working class to rise up

The people of South Yorkshire have been spoon fed by Labour for far too long.  You have been "Domesticated" into believing that you no longer have to look after yourselves, and truly believe that someone else is responsible for you. Wake up people of South Yorkshire, the reason the area is poor and dilapidated is YOU. Stop voting to be spoon fed by Labour - be responsible for yourself, your family and your town - it all starts by getting rid of the REDS!

How do you know a socialist is lying? - Their mouth is open!

Same old 'Divide and Rule'  tricks from the Tories & their Lib Dem allies turning ordinary working, and genuine non-working people against each other whilst they carry on plundering the public purse and helping their banker mates rape the economy.  The sad thing is that labour are no better as we've seen lately with ex-Barnsley MP Eric Illsley who couldn't manage on £200,000 a year and had to fiddle more of our money along with hundreds of other thieving MPs, Lords and other politicians.
They'll keep on kicking the poor when we're down but one day it will be our turn to do the kicking and they'll know about it.  Meanwhile we all need to wise up and realise just who the real scroungers are in our town and in society as a whole.

How else do you get power to fix the problems when most of the population think that living should be free and devoid or responsibility AKA THICK?
Genuine working, surely you don't mean plastic jobs (Public Sector), ie an overall cost to the economy, you must mean those that actually contribute through a real job.

We need a public sector, but you must remember that each job is a net loss (An expense to the country!).
We all need to understand that plastic jobs DO NOT contribute to the economy.
What public purse, the socialists blew it on keeping the plastic jobs going.
The simple truth is that our world is ending, and the big players are jumping ship and taking whatever they can with them - they want to be big players in the new world, and we will put them there.
What can we do? ....... Move to China!
Who's to blame....Look back, where did our industry and real businesses go, and which organisations forced them to move - could it have been the UNIONS by chance - and who are the unions? LABOUR.

Lets just hope the Government are sincere when they say they want to re-build our industrial economy.  The starting point is simple, dump the minimum wage, and most of the employment law!
Oh, and stop blaming the banks. It's human nature to be greedy, (that's why socialism is a failure). If a child gets too fat, who's to blame, the parent or the child.
The banks were allowed to be greedy by us, yes, you and me. Always wanting a bigger house or a new TV or the next phone borrow borrow borrow.
Personal debt and greed caused most of this, and who was the parent that allowed, nay forced the kids to over fill their faces - LABOUR.
