Photographer Opposes Council Rent Hike

Thursday November 22 2012

A PHOTOGRAPHER says she is struggling to sell her business because Barnsley Council plans to hike up the rent.

Lyndsay Brown, of Picture Proud at Elsecar Heritage Centre, rents a unit at the site for £450 a month.

She has worked there for five-and-a-half years and was hoping the business would continue with a new owner in January.

But when she notified the council of the change in ownership she said she was told a new licence would be needed, meaning new rates of £696 a month - an increase of more than 50 per cent.

The buyers of the business have said they can't afford the increased rent and Lyndsay said she will have to close the business if the council insist on increasing it.

She added: ""Nobody is going to pay £700 for this unit. It's not exactly big; I think we have got about 800 square feet in total, there's no heating and there's no toilet.

"The new rent £8,347 for the year and for £10,000 to £11,000 you can get double the size in a better location with heating, water and toilets.

"They're just cutting off their own nose. They're going to end up with an empty unit after Christmas. They're talking about helping smaller businesses but they're just helping to close a small business."

Lyndsay said she has been told the new rates had been brought in following a review in 2010.

She said she has a loyal and large customer base and would be very disappointed if it closed.

They don't deserve small business if they hike up the prices like this.

If the council stop wasting money on providing services for foreign immigrants and benefit scroungers they would have no need to hike up the rent and that would do more to promote small business in Barnsley. The people of Barnsley need to wake up and smell the coffee this Labour council is bleeding this town of it heritage of a working town and turning it into a town full of immigrants and benefit scroungers while the council leaders line their own pockets.

Barnsley is now unrecognisable to what it use to be. There's nothing that makes you want to shop there. Barnsley use to be a fantastic shopping town but not now. The council arent interested in helping businesses. All they want is as much rent from you as possible so they can waste it on meetings, councellors and other crap that we dont need! Labour! what a joke.

Barnsley Council reason like British Rail used to do...."too few people are using this route so we must put the prices up"......6mths later......"thats strange even less use it now so lets increase it even more"....6mths later ......"we will have to stop the line altogether because there is no demand".....and the line closes!

Having retail premises in both Barnsley and Gt. Manchester, it baffles me why Barnsley is dearer per square foot than manchester. Also Manchester will do all they can to help.
I have asked Elsecar 3 times about a workshop+ retail unit, just to be told " put your name on the list, and we will let you know". Follow up enquiries we just get told "never heard of you". Our private landlords are reducing rents to keep us in business! says it all really.
