A BARNSLEY man who runs a not-for-profit company delivering sport in schools has won a top award.

Former PE teacher Darren Padgett, who founded Team Activ 12 months ago, was named Unsung Hero at the Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards.

Darren, from Hoylandswaine, was nominated for the award by Gordon Calvert, sports coordinator at High View Primary in Wombwell, where Team Activ delivers sports activities for pupils.

Darren, whose company now employs 14 people from its base at Shaw Lane Sports and Social Club, said: “This award will really help us to raise awareness of the impact a model like ours can have on improving sport in schools. I’m already in talks with politicians as a result of the award win and I’m confident that we can use this award as a springboard to highlight our work at the highest level.”

Team Activ ploughs all its profits back into its programmes and by 2017, the social enterprise aims to re-invest £250,000 into community based sports activities.
