Suicide Fears As Service Cuts Announced

Thursday November 15 2012

A MENTAL health centre which looks after almost 100 patients has been earmarked for closure.

Two-thirds of staff at Moorland Court were given notice of a 90-day consultation period on the centre's future last month.

It has prompted fears that it could cause a rise in the number of suicide attempts if locals cannot get the help they need.

The Barnsley Council-run day centre caters for 98 adults with enduring mental health problems but was earmarked as a possible saving as part of swathing budget cuts.

A 68-year-old volunteer at the centre said: "Some of the people wouldn't be here now if this place wasn't going.

"I was so down and I felt absolutely suicidal and these people really helped me. It seems to take the stress out of living for a day. It takes you away for all the nasty things in life. It would be such a shame if it closed."

The council and South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust, the main provider of mental health services in Barnsley, is now looking at ways to 'remodel' the service.

A spokesman for the foundation trust said it will work with people on an individual basis to ensure their needs are met if the service changes.

This is so sad - of course the excuse will be that not many people use it - but those that need it should be able to access this well loved resource - so sorry for Emily's Dad and Family and all the other Patients of Mooland Court- AND two thirds of the staff - can Barnsley REALLY afford to lose valuable and probably irreplaceable Mental Health staff !!!!!!
