Heartless Thief Steals Charity Cash In Night Raid

Thursday November 8 2012

MORE than £100 of charity money has been stolen in a night raid on a fish pond.

CCTV footage at the Elephant and Castle, Hemingfield, shows a man who appears to be in his late 30s and about 6ft 2inch spending 20 minutes picking out coins from the pub's fish pond.

Patrons of the pub have thrown coins into it for a number of years so, after failing to convince them to stop, landlady Patricia Watson began collecting and cleaning the change for charity boxes on the bar.

This cash has gone to charities for the blind and children's hospice Bluebell Wood.

But, more recently, it has been funnelled into the campaign to extend the Elsecar Heritage Railway through Hemingfield to Morrisons at Cortonwood.

Patricia estimates the amount to be more than £100.

She said: "I can't understand how someone can stumble around a pond for 20 minutes stealing charity money.

"It's an absolute joke. You watch the footage and he walks down with such a swagger, like he hasn't got a care in the world, even though it was a freezing night."

• Call South Yorkshire Police on the non-emergency 101 number with any information.

I suspect anyone would have to be pretty desperate to go scrabbling round in a fish pond, when the temp is around freezing, for about £100. You couldn't pay me to do that. I don't agree with what he has done BUT we don't know how badly off he is AND it's certainly better than hurting someone for the same amount of money.

I dont in anyway condone what the thief has done.. But if you suspect there to be around £100 in the pond... Why leave that amount of money in it?!
