Jobs Boost Announced For Cortonwood

Wednesday November 7 2012

A JOBS boost could be coming to Cortonwood if plans for a £25 million extension to the retail park are approved.

Storage company Budenny LLP has submitted plans to Rotherham Council to redevelop a large warehouse on the site into six retail stores under the proposals that would create 250 jobs.

The stores will take up 96,000 sq ft and expand the retail park by 30 per cent, while adding 310 parking spaces.

The proposed development has been devised in partnership with Helical Retail - which believes the extension will make Cortonwood more competitive against rival shopping centres like Meadowhall in Sheffield and Parkgate, Rotherham.

Rotherham and Brampton parish Coun Denise Lelliot said: "Jobs are few and far between at the moment, particularly permanent ones so this can only be a benefit to the community."

The building is currently used as a warehouse for package delivery company United Parcel Services (UPS) but this contract expires in about a year.

Budenny director and former Alba chief executive Daniel Harris said running a warehouse on the site was no longer financially viable.

He said: "The economics of running a specialist, high-bay warehouse operation at Cortonwood no longer stack up. This is reflected in the operation now running only one shift and employing less than 30 people.

"When we opened the building ten years ago, we created 100 jobs and were running three shifts around the clock. But, working with Helical, we have found a partner with the right expertise to get a first class retail scheme developed."

Primark would be great. And a 99p shop. And a Jack Fultons as well

Reply Posted by jamie on Friday November 9 2012 at 15:14
I wouldn't see the point in a jack fultons as there one pritty much 5 minutes away and i doubt the head office would open another one that is likely to take buisness away from the one they have in wombwell .

sorry but i cant help laughing at these comments.its not so long ago when they announced the new shopping centre in barnsley that a lot of people were saying they wanted high end, designer type shops, and now everyone is saying they want primark, burger king, pound shops wynsors, iceland etc i think this just prooves my point that the majority of people in barnsley dont want and cant afford high end stores

Reply Posted by Hoyland Red on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 15:15
Barnsley Lass - I think you're missing the point. It may be difficult to show tone in a posted message but I'm sure the previous posters are being sarcastic about pound shops and Primark etc. There are plenty of people in Barnsley that shop at the high end but clearly there aren't that many shops here at the moment, however Frank Bird, Pollyanna etc have been here quite a while and still appear to be going strong.

Reply Posted by Jess on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 17:14
I wasnt being sarcastic. I have to travel to parkgate to go to a pound shop and then I normally go to doncaster or meadowhall for a primark. I also shop at high end shops but somehow I dont see how high end shops will fit in at cortonwood..

Reply Posted by Carl on Friday November 9 2012 at 17:49
The funny thing is, before Britain fell into the double-depression, everyone wanted high-end shops... Now we're out, nobody wants to spend that much money.
Still, we need more PoundShops.

Hobby craft , or a big pet store something along them lines as our nearest big craft warehouse is sheffield.

Reply Posted by barnsley lass on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 18:21
i dont think the majority were being sarcastic hoyland red,i think they were being reallistic if you read the comments on other posts on this site people are constantly stating they are struggling to live so it makes sense that people want stores they can afford to shop in

Reply Posted by Hoyland Red on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 19:15
Which is fair enough - if people want to shop in Poundland, Poundstretcher, Farmfoods then fine but your comment that the posts on here are representative of the majority of Barnsley residents may be misplaced. I'm sure when Debenhams, H&M etc open in the new development in town (when its built) there will be plenty of custom or else these companies wouldn't be interested in signing up.

Can we have a Farmfoods pretty please lol.
No seriously it's a really good cheap frozen food shop, we do not have one in the Barnsley area, nearest one is Hemsworth or Sheffield.

Reply Posted by barnsley lass on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 19:45
my comment wasnt ment in that way hoyland red and i appologise if thats the way it came over. the point i was trying to make was that if you read comments on any post on this site reffering to the standard of living of the people of barnsley most people state that they are struggling.and if that is the case then surely they would prefer stores that they can actually afford to shop in

Reply Posted by sarah on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 20:22
Would like to see a farmfoods in barnsley !!!

Reply Posted by Graham Nicholson on Sunday December 9 2012 at 12:57
Thats good idea to put a farmfoods in barnsley than running to sheffield for farmfoods

costas and subway....... cant understand that we have one down near kfc when i reckon they shoul all be up there together....not a kfc fan but costa and subway !!

Reply Posted by ted on Wednesday November 7 2012 at 23:58
I just wish they wouldn't spread all the fast food shops all over the place. Surely if they had them all together in a row it would make it so much more convenient for customers, and perhaps they could all share the same waste fat bin, round the back?. Which is obviously a more cost effective and environmentally friendly aspect to all this.

It would be great if they could have an indoor market there as well. Perhaps Sailor Sid would then open a sweet stall there?... It's such a chore for me to get to get the bus to Barnsley from West Melton to pick up my weekly bag of licorice torpedo's from Sid's stall........ I'm Seventy two, you know!...

Reply Posted by barnsley lass on Thursday November 8 2012 at 11:12
i think wab should have a survey to see what type of shops barnsley people actually want to try and prevent ending up with stores people dont want or can't afford to shop in. give everyone a chance to have their say

Reply Posted by Chloe on Friday November 9 2012 at 11:30
Primark would just make my day :) and Barnsley Lass whats point in having all this expensive shops when you could just get a great outfit from primark for half the price.

PRIMARK AND POUNDSHOP
MAYBE PETS AT HOME
OR A GREGGS AH HA

Reply Posted by c on Friday November 9 2012 at 11:44
Chloe, Barnsley Lass never said she wanted expensive shops, she's against them.
We just want shops that are realistically priced :)

H & M,
T K Maxx,
Costa or a Starbucks,
HMV,

Reply Posted by Jamie on Friday November 9 2012 at 15:18
I think something like a range or b&m should be opened as they serve a variety of stuff. Also a plus size clothes shop as there isn't many around these day and I know it would gain money as alot of people struggle to find clothes that fit.

Reply Posted by barnsley lass on Friday November 9 2012 at 15:58
i totally agree with you chloe i just dont think that with the way people are struggling at the moment high end stores would be able to survive,im not saying that no one in barnsley can afford these stores but i dont think there are enough who can and i dont think it would fetch people into barnsley from other areas as they already have places like meadowhall to shop ,but that is just my opinion.

Reply Posted by Danni on Friday November 9 2012 at 16:23
I don't think one person can speak for the whole of Barnsley in saying what type of shops we do/don't want. Personally there can't be too many Primarks anywhere lol. I live in Cumbria now and closest is Newcastle so when i do come home to barno Primark if were i head first lol.

Reply Posted by barnsley lass on Friday November 9 2012 at 18:11
i dont think anyone is speaking for the whole of barnsley danni i think everyone is just stating their own opinions but you have to admit you dont see anyone on any post regarding income and standard of living saying i work ive got a great standard of living and im not struggling everyone says the oposite

Can I just point out that whatever opens at Cortenwood, it does not put any funding into the Barnsley economy, as though it is on the border, it is actually in Rotherham, so all rates paid by the businesses goes to Rotherham MBC.

I FEEL SORRY FOR THE STAFF THAT WORK AT THE UPS WAREHOUSE THAT IS ON THE SITE OF THE DEVELOPMENT, UPS HAVE TOLD THEM THAT IT IS NOT TRUE THAT IT IS NOT TO BE DEMOLISHED, YET THEY HAVE SUBMITTED PLANNING APPLICATIONS TO ROTHERHAM COUNCIL TO DEVELOP 9777 SQ MTR OF RETAIL, CAR PARKING AND LANDSCAPING.
THE APPLICATION HAS BEEN SUBMITTED AND RMBC ARE JUST WAITING FOR MISSING INFORMATION AND THEN THE APPLICATION WILL BE FULLY PROCESSED, UPS ARE JUST NATURAL BORN LIARS, LETS SEE 200 JOBS CREATED AGAINST 30 UPS JOBS LOST, DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THIS WILL NOT GO AHEAD???? YES IT WILL GO AHEAD, THAT IS CERTAIN, THE MISSING INFORMATION WILL BE SUBMITTED JUST BEFORE THE APPLICATION TIME LIMIT RUNS OUT AND IT WILL THEN GO AHEAD.
