Road Safety Drive For Notorious 'Danger' Road

AVERAGE speed cameras are being installed on one of Barnsley's most notorious accident black spot roads.

The section of the A61 - which runs between Grenoside and the A616 roundabout in Tankersley - has seen six people killed and 19 seriously injured in crashes that have happened in the last five years. Another 93 people have been injured on that road.

A new speed controlled zone will be created that will see average speed cameras installed to control vehicle speeds.

Chief Inspector Stuart Walne said: “Inappropriate speed is a common factor in collisions which have previously happened on this stretch of the A61.

"Traditional speed enforcement is not straightforward along this route and we have had to look at ways of using current technology to its best effect.

“The cameras are being installed as a road safety measure. If they don’t record anyone breaking the speed limit on the road that will be great. It’s not about catching people, it is simply about reducing collisions and saving injuries and life.”

The police have warned there may be slight delays while contractors install the equipment.

i travel this road to and from work mostly by motorcycle, there are 4 roads ajoining this strech of road and the ammount of time ive had cars pull out in front of me is alarming , going towards sheffield the 2nd grenocide turn off is almost blind for those joining and those on the a61 as its a blind cresent of a hill , i think looking into those spots instead of speed cameras should be considered

So people constantly checking their speedo instead of the road on a twisty stretch with blind crescents etc will make it safer?

I think i'm correct in saying alot of the accidents occured near Tankersley manor with vehicles doing u turns to avoid the conjestion. The road should be dual carriageway right through instead of the 2 to one part that just creates conjestion and frustrated drivers. I do hope the revenue they make from the cameras will be used to improve the road but seriously doubt it.

i wonder if it could be revealed how much the scameras earn on the Stocksbridge bypass and onwards towards manchester....because they don't stop accidents and deaths but they do earn loads of money

The stretch of road the cameras are goin on isn't an accident black spot !!! from the petrol station to the m1 is where most accidents happen. These cameras are been put up surely just to earn cash and some of them are hidden by the trees i wouldn't be surprised if these cameras cause more accidents and if as i suspect they do who will be held accountable for this ??? Surely the person who is after grabbing as much money as possible is !!!!!!!!

I travel on this road everyday to work and back and the main prob I find isn't people speeding.. It's people that pull out on drivers from the junctions adjoining A61 and don't get their speed up When travelling at 50 miles per hour. Nearly had a serious accident myself by a driver who did this and then wanted to go 30 miles per hour and another driver tailgating behind me so close to a 3 car pile up!
