Town Centre Night Pub Given Reprieve

Tuesday October 16 2012

A TOWN CENTRE pub has been given a reprieve after police asked the council to review its licence.

The police raised concerns over crime and disorder and public safety in relation to Lucorum, on Hanson Street.

But, at the town hall, pub representatives convinced the licensing board to allow it to keep its trading license - provided it met certain conditions.

Chairman of the Licensing Board, Coun Charlie Wraith, said: ''The police gave their evidence and Lucorum gave theirs.

''The conclusion was that Lucorum's management was willing to accept a long list of requirements and have been given an opportunity to put their house in order.

''Police were quite happy with the decision taken yesterday and the situation will be monitored by the police and the local authority. Lucorum could have had its licence revoked yesterday so we will have to see what happens.''

An indication of how problems at the club could get out of hand was given in a police report detailing how in the early hours of May 7 police officers entered the club after claims that there was fighting between men of differing ethnic backgrounds.

The report said: ''Friction had developed between the elements and violence had erupted. Three males were arrested to prevent a further breach of the peace.''

Eight police officers, three dog handlers and three firearms officers were required to resolve the incident.

In addition to the problems cited by police the council's officers were also concerned about alleged noise problems dating back to 2009.

George - their license has not been revoked therefore they are still open to trade, dependent upon conditions set by the local authority. If conditions are not improved their license will be revoked and they will be forced to close.

Grammar - I agree.

Maybe now someone can look into that certain town centre pub that is serving kids as young as 14 without asking for ID? Only I've reported it several times over the past year, and no action has been taken.
