Fatality In Serious M1 Accident
Friday October 12 2012
A STRETCH of the M1 is closed after an accident earlier involving a lorry and a pedestrian in which someone has died.
It is closed northbound between Juction 37 (Dodworth) and Junction 38 at Woolley.
The Highways Agency has issued a statement saying the fatal incident, involving a lorry and a pedestrian, happened at about 12.30pm.
A South Yorkshire Police accident investigation is underway and the northbound carriageway is likely to be closed for several hours.
A diversion is in place with northbound drivers being asked to follow the Hollow Square symbol taking them from junction 37 to junction 39 - via the westbound A628, north west along the A629 and then east and north east along the A635 and A636 respectively.
Traffic is at a standstill on the motorway with tailbacks affecting the Tankersley junction.
It is having a knock-on effect on town centre traffic, with Harborough Hill roundabout becoming heavily conjested with people trying to find an alternative route.
