THE line-up of this year's Christmas Light Switch On festivities have been revealed by Barnsley Council.

Children's TV character Mike The Knight will be flicking the switch at the Alhambra Balcony in the town centre at 6pm on November 21.

Festivities start at 5pm with a roadshow led by Dearne FM on the balcony, that will feature local entertainment.

A council spokesman said: "This year it's a very family orientated event - that's been our aim."

Meanwhile, the Christkindlmarkt has been rebranded to a Christmas Gift Market and will be held in the town centre from November 30 - December 2.

There will be a dedicated marquee that will showcase the work of local artists and crafters for sale - and will feature handmade jewellery, cakes, leather bags, clothing and newborn gifts.

I think there were too many cutbacks for your education based on the terrible spelling and grammar...

Loads of kids will love seeing Mike the Knight turn the Christmas Lights on. And in response to the 'cut backs' comment I would personally be furious if a load of money was spent on a 'so called celebrity' turning the lights on especially given the possible amount of staff that will lose their jobs and public services that will be scrapped/reduced in the hope of saving money for the council.....cutting back on the Christmas Lights turn on..... too right we should its not a necessity!

Who needs all the over rated so called celebraties to turn lights on. Whatever happened to having the christmas spirit being enough. Mighty sad when all some people are bothered about is how much money is being thrown at something :(

Well I have never heard off him either but that doesn't matter because Christmas for me is all about the children and clearly know who he is, so that's all that matters. I hope everyone has a fab time seeing children have fun, that's good enough for me.

Absolutely disgraceful, what an insult to the lovely people from Germany, who have year upon year made a magnificent contribution to Xmas at Barnsley in favour of local so called new born gifts. Barnsley won't be special in early December

Reply Posted by Lauren on Monday October 29 2012 at 15:23
I don't think it shouldn't matter who is turning the lights on. When I was a kid, I would have been over the moon with just being able to see santa. After all, the night will only be as good as you make it!

Reply Posted by Goodienuff on Monday November 19 2012 at 21:56
There usually are lots of fireworks whenever I've been there.

Reply Posted by Lauren on Wednesday November 21 2012 at 00:10
Barnsley gets worsee:/ Half of people don't even know ''mike the knight'', What's up for everyone else over 5? What performance is a cartoon character gunna give. Wipe my hands on barnsley, this year is a let down!

Reply Posted by Danni on Wednesday November 21 2012 at 09:38
I'm in stitches about how this conversation then got swamped with illiterate chavs proclaiming their undying love hahahahaha comical reading! And one direction turning BARNSLEYS lights on? Yeah right but then again thank god!

Reply Posted by jason on Wednesday November 21 2012 at 09:59
this has actually cheered me up, great banter! Great for the young kids but the council should be appealing to the over 5s as well. As for the market sadly many of the stalls were not actually from Germany. However not sure how good the "craft" stalls are going to look?

Reply Posted by April on Wednesday November 21 2012 at 10:08
I hope the stalls are better than last year, I was embarrassed for barnsley! Some of the stalls looked like someone had nipped into the pound shop then set up on a paste table! I realise we won't ever have the quality of a city German market, but come one surely the council must vet the stalls, prior to offering them out?
