Warning Issued As Thieves Target Elderly
Thursday October 11 2012
SNEAK thieves posing as council workers are targeting elderly residents across Barnsley in an attempt to steal cash from their homes.
Police have issued a warning today after the latest incident in Worsbrough Common, where a man and woman attempted to get entry into a propety.
They fled when the occupant asked for identification.
A spokesman said there has been a spare of incidents across town, including several in Wombwell and Darfield. The theives have sometimes been successful but other times have left when challenged.
A spokesman said: "We have put on extra patrols and we are trying to find them but we are putting out safety messages there they are out there, preying on old people.
"There seems to be a few of them using the same MO, saying they are from the council. The best advice we can give is to always ask for ID."
If you see any suspicious behaviour you can report it to police on 101. Or call 999 if the crime is in progress.
