MORE than 40 locals slept rough in Barnsley on Friday night to raise money for charity.

The event, for charity Safe@Last, was to support the work done locally for young people that run away from home.

Volunteers included South Yorkshire Police Missing Persons Investigator Tim Fish, Barnsley’s Mayor Dorothy Higginbottom and a group from Penistone Scouts.

Those who took part had to forgo all comforts for the night as they were only allowed basic items to keep warm such as a sleeping bag and cardboard box.

Tim said: “In respect of the young people who run away from home and sleep rough with no form of shelter, I made the conscious decision to not have a sleeping bag and sleep rough in only the clothes I was wearing. Having laid out all night it brought to light the importance for the public to report missing children and any that they see sleeping rough. It takes only a second to call 101 and pass on those vital details.”

The event was supported by Voluntary Action Barnsley.
