Police Appeal For Information After Four Car Road Accident

POLICE are trying to trace witnesses to a four car pile-up on the M1 last week.

The accident, which happened on Thursday (Sept 20) happened near the Thorpe Hesley junction at around 9.45am.

It is believed that a white Renault 420 large goods vehicle has swerved to avoid debris in the road, causing it to collide with a grey Volkswagen Polo.

The Volkswagen Polo then spun before colliding with a red Honda Civic. The Honda Civic was struck by a black Peugeot 307.

Emergency services had to cut free a 42-year-old woman from Barnsley, who was driving the LGV and a 39-year-old woman from Leeds, the passenger in the Volkswagen Polo.

The 42-year-old woman was taken to Barnsley District Hospital with a broken toe and minor cuts and the 39-year-old woman was taken to the Northern General Hospital suffering from shock and whiplash.

A 32-year-old woman from Halifax, the driver of the Volkswagen Polo was taken to the Northern General Hospital suffering from shock and a 77-year-old woman and a 82-year-old man from Huddersfield, travelling in the Peugeot 307 were taken to Barnsley District Hospital, both suffering from shock and chest injuries.

All three lanes of the M1 between Junction 36 and Junction 35 were closed for over an hour and a half before the road was re-opened at 12.15pm.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident and would urge them to call 101 quoting incident number 242 of 20 September 2012.
