Council Bosses Say No More Speed Humps

Monday September 3 2012

HIGHWAYS bosses have said that no more speed humps will be installed in Barnsley - because people have threatened to sue the council amid claims they damaged cars.

Humps were installed across the borough over several years in a bid to slow down speeding motorists but many drivers claim they cause damage to their vehicles.

Some have tried to sue Barnsley Council for damages prompting the change in policy.

Coun Roy Miller said: "Because of all the trouble we are having with them, in that half the public want them and half the public don't, the council decided to stop them.

"The emergency services don't like them and a lot of people have been putting in claims against damage to their cars."

He said many of the claims came from youngsters who had lowered the suspension on their vehicles.

"We've always been able to defend against these because, if the vehicle is fit for MOT, it should be the right height," he added.

A Barnsley Council spokesman said two insurance claims had been dealt with in the last year.

I think speedbumps are needed in certain areas but on one stretch of road (Sackup Lane in particular) there are too many and they are too high and not all needed. think the council went a bit crazy or had to spend their budget when they put all those bumps there. Our car maintenance bills have rocketed in tyres and i cannot get off my street without going over any bumps at all. No need!!!

what about our kids, it does not matter about car cost, they can be replaced, my kids cannot!! (I also drive but cannot put a price on my childrens safety) If your car caost too mush, use public transport.

Greg I appreicate your concern for your children as yes too many drivers do far any speed limit in built up areas. But they are not stopping the drivers speeds choose how much it costs in repairs, but have a thought ( not you ) Council for many many disabled people in cars cjoose how slow we slow down it does not stop any one with sever Back trouble and those with hip replacements that the Jarring dose and of course it is bad for the Ambulances too with injured peopl . May be the humps were put in to use council budget up, I am sure I am not alone with the problems mentioned so it would be kinder all round to move the lot and get cameras up to fine drivers that will stop them, dose anyone agree?

the motorist is over persecuted in this country with taxes. etc. speed bumps should be removed immediately as mauren quite rightly said. ambulances and disabled suffer. not jusy motorists maintenance bills. kides should not be on a road anyhow, and if close to a road it is parents responsbility to ensure that each particular child knows how to cross a road and where and how to be aware on and close to a road. camerss are not the solution. this has been tried and tested throughout great britain.

those smaller humps are fine but the bought in ones which are very high and angular are the problem..my car is standard and they can damage the suspension at well below the declared road speed....if that road speed is too high then change it,..... but don't put obstacles in the way to damage a car especially if it's driving below the speed allowed on that road.
