A SCAM warning has been issued as cold-callers pretending to be offering debt advice are asking for locals bank details.

The scammers are posing as members of Barnsley's Citizen's Advice Bureau and are said to be preying on people with money worries.

Citizens Advice Bureau Chief Executive Pat Heath said: “This is a despicable scam that trades on public trust in our service.

"We were horrified when a member of the public from the Staincross area contacted us to find out how we knew they were in debt and told us they had had several calls over the last week from someone claiming to be one of our advisers and asking for their bank details.

"We wish to make it very clear that no CAB adviser, or anyone connected with the CAB, would ever phone or text someone out of the blue to offer debt management services. We cannot stress this too strongly, and we would urge anyone getting a bogus call like this to end the call as quickly as possible, never give or confirm any personal information, and to report the call immediately to Action Fraud and to the CAB."

Contact details of Barnsley CAB can be found online: www.barnsleycab.org.uk or if you receive a cold call contact Action Fraud immediately on 0300 123 2040.
